West Virginia University (WVU) School of Medicine seeks an experienced, innovative, and collaborative leader to serve as its next Dean of the WVU School of Medicine, Eastern Division. The successful applicant will have an established track record as an excellent physician-educator or physician-scholar with a vision for the future of medical education, the discovery of knowledge, and high-quality, compassionate, patient-centered care.

Duties of the regional Dean include providing strategic leadership and direction in all educational, scholarship, and recruitment aspects of the Eastern Division while actively working to foster and ensure an environment of highest quality clinical care for faculty and learners. The successful candidate will bring a proven record in educational, scholarship, and clinical program development and the ability to lead change in a collaborative manner across a matrixed organization with tremendous potential for growth.

The position requires an individual with strong interpersonal and leadership skills and the ability to mentor physician leaders, guide teams, and build both programs and collective potential. Administrative experience should include strategic planning, finance/budgeting, and physician recruitment and retention.

Applicants must be board certified, have an MD or DO, and be eligible to obtain an unrestricted West Virginia medical license. A minimum of five years of administrative experience in an academic medical center, and a commitment to service, teaching, and research are required. Applicants must be eligible for Associate or Professor rank in the clinical or tenure track and must meet all requirements by the time of appointment.

The WVU School of Medicine Eastern division is an integrated part of a single medical school comprised of three campuses: a regional campus in Charleston WV and the flagship Morgantown campus, a 700+ bed academic medical campus with 1000+ faculty, over 77 training programs and J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital, WVU Children’s Hospital, WVU Cancer Institute, WVU Heart and Vascular Institute, and the Rockefeller Neuroscience Institute. Eastern division faculty are members of the faculty of the school of medicine with full access to main campus resources including educational, research and clinical innovation partnerships. They are also members of the WVU Medicine health system, which provides tertiary and quaternary care through a multispecialty practice plan and 22 hospitals in four states. The WVU Health System has been ranked number 180 out of 500 businesses selected for the Forbes list of “America’s Best Employers 2021.”

The Eastern campus has 120+ faculty from 35 specialties caring for patients in clinics across three counties, and in our 190-bed hospital in Berkeley County and 25 bed critical access hospital in Jefferson county. The campus is the site of 3rd and 4th year medical student rotations and home to a range of training programs including family medicine residency program, psychology internship and fellowship, and rotations for residents, fellows, physician assistants and other learners from Morgantown. The Eastern campus is in the development stages of an internal medicine residency program and also serves as the training site for multiple other learners across the state and region including osteopathic students, NP, nursing, and pharmacy students.

The Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia is one of the fastest growing areas of the state and is in close driving distance from the DC and Baltimore metro areas. It is renowned for its charming old towns on the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers and easy access to the Blue Ridge and Appalachian Mountains.
