This is a 12-month non-tenure position that will be 100% research available in the Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (IFAS), Fort Lauderdale Research and Education Center at the University of Florida. This assignment may change in accordance with the needs of the unit. The principal duties and responsibilities assigned to this position are: Recommend and implement strategy and tactics for research programs related to restoration of the Everglades and the ecology of South Florida; Develop, direct, and participate in research projects with an emphasis on large reptile ecology; Prepare and review manuscripts for publication in refereed science journals, as well as presentations for scientific meetings; Develop methods and techniques for, and evaluate results of experiments and scientific studies; Serve as principal investigator on research projects and seek extramural funding; and Serve as liaison with government and industry representatives.

Background Information :

The Fort Lauderdale Research and Education Center is a unit in the Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences at the University of Florida and has diverse teaching, research, and extension education programs with 18 faculty members and over 20 support personnel on the Davie campus. The urban setting of this Center is located about 27 miles north of Miami. Faculty members belong to six academic departments and a school (Agronomy, Entomology and Nematology, Environmental Horticulture, Microbiology and Cell Science, Plant Pathology, Wildlife Ecology & Conservation, and Forest Resources and Conservation (Geomatics)). Research programs at FLREC address aquatic plant management, entomology, microbiology, environmental horticulture, palm production and maintenance, geomatics, plant pathology, wildlife ecology & conservation, and turfgrass science.

Minimum Requirements:

Required :

A doctorate (foreign equivalent acceptable) in Biological Sciences or a closely related discipline is required. Candidates should have demonstrated skills in verbal and written communication, and interpersonal relationships. Candidates must have a minimum of 5 years’ experience working with large reptiles. Candidates must have a working knowledge of field and quantitative conservation techniques for crocodylians and management techniques for large reptiles in South Florida, Latin American, and the Caribbean. Candidates must be supportive of the mission of the Land-Grant system. Candidates must also have a commitment to IFAS core values of excellence, diversity, global involvement, and accountability.

Preferred Qualifications:

Preferred :

Demonstrated experience working with international Federal, State, and local agencies, indigenous, and nongovernmental organizations on issues of invasive species management. Ability to operate motorboats, airboats, ATVs, and 4WD vehicles is desirable. Knowledge of ArcGIS and RStudio beneficial.
