Lecturer Position in Engineering Design at the OEDK

The School of Engineering at Rice University seeks unique and energetic applicants for a non-tenure track faculty appointment with a full-time focus on undergraduate engineering design education at the Oshman Engineering Design Kitchen (OEDK). The OEDK provides undergraduate engineering students with ready access to design tools, prototyping equipment, computational facilities, meeting rooms and ample space for prototype design and development. Classes and programs at the OEDK challenge students to solve real-world design challenges brought to them by clients. OEDK offers courses for students from freshman through senior year that are part the Engineering Design minor. In addition, OEDK supports other courses within the School of Engineering that have embedded engineering design components. The OEDK is also a hub of activity and a social center for undergraduate engineering student creativity, clubs, and experimentation through its programs and resources. Specifically we are looking for an individual who is passionate about undergraduate teaching, has a rich experience in engineering design, and is highly motivated to contribute to a dynamic and growing academic maker-space.

Position Summary

The position will involve teaching engineering design in several sections and/or courses to undergraduate students each semester. Specific duties are expected to include some combination of teaching or co-teaching hands-on core and elective undergraduate engineering design courses to support the Engineering Design Minor. Teaching topics may include:

• ENGI 120 (or ENGI 220 or FWIS 188) – Introduction to Engineering Design
• ENGI 200 – Engineering Design Studio
• ENGI 210 – Prototyping and Fabrication
• ENGI 300 – Engineering Design Workshop
• ENGI 301 – Introduction to Practical Electrical Engineering
• ENGI 350 – Problem Identification and Implementation
• ENGI 355 – Digital and Computer Aided Design

Woven throughout our courses, faculty at the OEDK support student learning by:

• Developing and running authentic design projects from industrial sponsors, community members, and faculty
• Mentoring students on:
  • Design, fabrication, and testing of product prototypes
  • Project management
  • Communication- written, oral and visual
• Providing personalized academic advising for students
• Participating in course assessment and Engineering Design minor activities

OEDK faculty have the opportunity to participate and/or lead OEDK summer programs such as:

• Summer Experience in Engineering Design (SEED)
• Rice Emerging Scholars Program (RESP)- Engineering design component
• International - Summer Experience in Engineering Design (iSEED)

A PhD degree in engineering or a related field is required. Prior experience teaching undergraduate students is preferred. Individuals with practical electronics and/or industry experience (e.g., design and manufacturing, project management, regulatory requirements, engineering and/or commercial development) as well as recent PhD graduates are encouraged to apply. Candidates with deep experience in prototyping, working with engineering design teams, and building or using academic maker-spaces are particularly encouraged. Competitive applicants will also exhibit strong interpersonal and communication skills in addition to demonstrating a deep passion for undergraduate engineering teaching and related pedagogy. Position title and compensation will be commensurate with experience.
