Position Summary

The Department of Chemistry at Rice University is seeking a Shipping and Receiving Coordinator for the Chemistry Stockroom. The Chemistry Stockroom provides laboratory supplies, compressed/liquid gas products and shipping services to support research on campus.

The incumbent handles the shipment and receipt of gas products/laboratory supplies and a variety of incoming materials. Additionally, incumbent tracks inventory, maintains records and distributes products to research labs. Provides general bookkeeping for all shipping and receiving functions.

The ideal candidate should have experience in academic research setting and have knowledge of Excel to track shipping/receiving transactions.

Essential Functions
  • Receives, unpacks, and delivers goods; re-stocks items as necessary; labels shelves
  • Processes and documents returns as required following established procedures
  • Maintains and updates Chemistry Store accounting system, reconciles monthly department and faculty funds
  • Records purchases, maintains database, performs physical count of inventory, and reconciles actual stock count to computer-generated reports
  • Monitors and maintains current inventory levels; processes purchasing orders as required; tracks orders and investigates problems
Required Qualifications
  • HS Diploma or equivalent
  • 2 years of experience in Shipping and Receiving
    • In lieu of the experience requirement, additional related education, above and beyond what is required, on an equivalent year for year basis may be substituted
  • Ability to prepare routine administrative paperwork
  • Computer skills, specifically Microsoft Office Suite
  • Excellent communication skills both verbal and written
  • Excellent organizational skills
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Business/Logistics
  • Inventory Management experience
  • 1 year experience working in a university service center
  • Experience working with internal and external vendors
  • Background knowledge of safe handling and disposal of chemicals and hazardous waste; emergency plans and their implementation; and property administration specific to purchase order tracking, receiving, and inventory control
  • Experience working with inventory management programs
  • Basic accounting knowledge and spreadsheets
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities
Physical Demands

Incumbent should be able to climb stairs, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and lift up to 50 lbs. without assistance.
