Position Summary
The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Rice University works to solve pressing societal challenges associated with infrastructure and the environment by conducting ground breaking research and educating a new generation of leaders in this space. This unit organizationally sits within the George R. Brown School of Engineering, and is comprised of a vibrant and growing group of faculty, staff and students working at the forefront of safe, sustainable, equitable and resilient civil and environmental systems.
The Faculty Administrator in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering will be responsible for a variety of administrative duties that facilitate the Department Chair’s ability to effectively lead the department. This includes leading, monitoring and coordinating various departmental programmatic activities and special projects. The Faculty Administrator will be responsible for strategic efforts and activities within the Department such as those related to events, communications and marketing, outreach and data analytics, and reporting. S/he will work under the general supervision of the Department Chair along with the Sr. Department Administrator. This position requires a high level of professionalism, organization and interpersonal skills, and the ability to adapt and anticipate needs.
This position entails work on Rice University’s campus, with the potential for some remote work/flexible work arrangements. It is hiring at a starting salary between $55,000 and $60,000 per year.
Essential Functions
- Administers program operations, ensuring efficient, effective and productive operations
- Creates and implements plans to achieve program objectives and mission
- Interprets, implements, and ensures compliance with policies and regulations and recommends changes to procedures and processes
- Analyzes data, identifies trends, develops reports and recommends and implements changes to improve alignment with institutional mission and goals
- Creates and implements outreach plans that may include relationship development, communications, event and conference management
- Provides support in developing relationships with internal and external entities
- May assist with fundraising activities
- Represents the department at the university level and/or to external parties
- May coordinate the work of junior staff or students
- Provides advanced administrative support to the Department Chair
- Performs all other duties as assigned
- Bachelor’s Degree
- In lieu of the education requirement, additional related experience, above and beyond what is required, on an equivalent year for year basis may be substituted
- Three years of related experience in program and/or office administration

- Ability to draft and edit professional communications (web, email, brochures, social media, internal and external documents, reports)

- Skills in data analysis and reporting
- Knowledge of managing budgets, expense reporting and developing financial plans
- Strong interpersonal skills
- Time-management skills
- Ability to pay attention to detail
- Demonstrated use of strong organization skills
