Research Specialist I



Position Summary

The Genetic Design and Engineering Center (GDEC) is a state-of-the-art synthetic biology core facility that serves Rice University and the Texas Medical Center. GDEC seeks to use high-throughput cloning, robotic automation, and next-generation sequencing to build genetic constructs at a scale not accessible to individual labs. The facility will enable large-scale experimentation and bioengineering to accelerate cancer research and therapeutics. The technician position at GDEC will involve molecular cloning, next-generation sequencing/sample preparation, operation of liquid handling robots, sample management, and lab maintenance as required. Lab management duties will include assessing laboratory supply inventories, assisting in the ordering new reagents, and helping to organize laboratory protocols.

This position has flexible work arrangements.

Essential Functions
  • Conducts plasmid sequence design, cloning, and validation
  • Operates liquid handling devices and sequencing platforms following established protocols and workflows
  • Organizes samples and catalogues sample information in databases
  • Communicates results through verbal presentations, written reports, and written articles submitted for publication in conjunction with PI
  • May assist in administration of research project
  • Performs all other duties as assigned
Additional Functions / Information
  • Procures research materials and supplies for GDEC
  • Assists GDEC core manager with general laboratory organization and equipment maintenance
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in biology, cell biology, biochemistry, biophysics, bioengineering, or related
  • One year of research experience
    • Research experience gained as a student may qualify
  • Skills Required
    • Listening, verbal and written communication, analytical, and research skills
    • Good scientific and numerical skills with meticulous attention to details and accuracy
    • Ability to work in a team environment, to participate actively, to collaborate and to motivate others in the lab
    • Critical thinking, technical, data collection and interviewing skills
    • Ability to maintain quality, safety and / or infection control standards
    • Ability to plan and schedule effectively
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience or familiarity molecular cloning of DNA constructs
  • Experience or familiarity with molecular biology, biochemistry, or cell biology
  • Some experience or familiarity with maxi-prep/mini-preps, PCR, and gel electrophoresis
