Research Analyst (Research Assistant)



Position Summary

The Houston Education Research Consortium (HERC) is a research-practice partnership between Rice University and several Houston-area school districts. HERC aims to improve the connection between education research and decision-making, with the ultimate goal of closing socioeconomic gaps in educational achievement and attainment in Houston.

HERC is seeking full-time research analysts (research assistants) to aid in conducting various research projects in partnership with Houston-area school districts. The research analysts will assist with the development of research questions, data collection as needed, data analysis, and writing and presenting research findings. They may guide and mentor student research assistants when needed. The research analysts are expected to attend weekly staff and research team meetings. The selected candidates will serve as a representative of HERC and carry out the research agenda established by HERC and its partners.

The ideal candidates will work in a team environment, actively collaborate and is able to motivate others. They has superior scientific and numerical skills with meticulous attention to details and accuracy.

Essential Functions
  • Assist with interpreting related research projects; develops research questions, collects, and analyzes data, and communicates findings
  • Schedules and administers surveys to research participants
  • Maintains and implements quality control standards for varying research projects
  • Facilitates planning, scheduling, execution, and completion of school district research projects
  • Run regression models using standard statistical methods and techniques
  • Verify the accuracy of data analysis using scientific and numerical skills
  • Interpret and communicate research findings for various publications including research briefs, journals, and manuscripts, and data visualization graphics
Required Qualifications
  • Master’s degree (or foreign equivalent) in Education, Social Science, or related field AND completion of a University-level course, thesis, dissertation, graduate-level research project OR One (1) year of experience in each of the following:
    • Data maintenance and analysis;
    • Maintaining quality control standards;
    • Quantitative methodology; and
    • Stata, SAS, or R.
Working Conditions
  • Occasional travel
  • Evening and/or weekend work as needed
  • Telecommuting allowed from Harris County, Texas and surrounding counties.
