Position Summary

The associate director will serve as the advisor for the undergraduate student government known as the Student Association, a highly influential organization representing the student body and working closely with upper level administration. This role will also oversee student engagement and clubs. Specific areas include club leadership programming, and OwlNest, Rice’s student engagement platform. The associate director also supervises the assistant director of student engagement, who manages activities fairs, club finances and club registration.

An ideal candidate has experience managing or working with a student engagement platform, managing club registration, facilitating leadership programming, overseeing financial reconciliation, and advising a large scale organization that works with complex student policy issues and student governance.

Salary Range : $52,100-$60,000 Annually

Essential Functions
  • Support department and area mission, vision and goals
  • Oversight for Student Activities related to all advisement of programs, leadership development, and financial responsibility
  • Develops, updates and enforces operating policies and procedures for Student Activities
  • Supervises, sets functional area goals and provides performance feedback and professional development for direct reports
  • Manages Student Activities budget
  • Serves as lead for OwlNest student engagement software (Anthology) for campus and division use
  • Advises the Student Association (SA) undergraduate student government and all of its leaders and components
  • Advises and guides student leaders in the planning and implementation of program and event logistics, including risk management
  • Develops, plans and implements programming and outreach for student leaders and the campus community
  • Coordinates leadership development programming and resources for student leaders, clubs, and other university entities
  • Responsible for logistics and marketing related to area(s) of responsibility
  • Assists with general oversight for university and governmental compliance, and serves as university representative in regards to policy enforcement
  • Performs all other duties as assigned
Additional Functions / Information
  • Serves as back-up for Assistant Directors’ duties when necessary
  • Documents and assesses area functions on a regular basis
  • Supervises the financial management for over 300 organizations in conjunction with the assistant director of student engagement
  • Supports university initiatives and programming through college senators, SA committees, and New Student Representative program
  • Leads the planning and facilitation of club leadership programming including the Summit Leadership Symposium and monthly lunch and lead workshops; managing all timelines, budgets and logistics related these programs
  • Responsible for program logistics including budgeting and risk management
  • Oversees Club budgets and financial processes with the assistant director of student engagement
  • Promotes and encourages both a diversity of programs and student participation in all aspects of involvement at the University
  • Manages club registration process with the assistant director of student engagement
  • Provides consultation and advising to support student organizations
  • Provides 1-1 consultation for high profile events
  • Serves as secondary on campus event related planning as needed
  • Occasionally, attendance at after-hours departmental events on or off campus may be required
Required Qualifications
  • Master’s Degree in student personnel administration or related field
  • Three years of related experience in areas such as:
    • Student activities
    • Leadership development
    • Advising high-level student organizations
    • Student engagement platforms
    • Budgeting
  • Skills Required
    • Excellent oral and written communications, and interpersonal skills
    • Ability to advise high-level student leaders in a one-on-one setting
    • Ability to apply student development theories to practice
    • Ability to oversee event planning and programs
    • Ability to instruct students and staff in risk management and program planning
    • Ability to supervise and assess staff
    • Must have some exposure to student activities, leadership development, student government, supervision, and student unions/centers
    • Ability to coordinate and facilitate leadership development programming
    • Ability to create training programs for students and/or student organizations
    • Exceptional problem solving and analytical skills
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience advising student government
  • Supervisory experience
  • Experience with club registration
  • Experience planning campus-wide events
  • Experience managing large budgets and reconciling expenses
  • Experience creating training programs for student organizations
  • Previous collegiate level student advising experience
  • Experience working in a university setting
