Position Summary

The pump mechanic III/ millwright III maintains all pump equipment and troubleshoots (by inspecting and diagnosing problems) when necessary. The pump mechanic III/ millwright III repairs and overhauls all mechanical equipment, such as; centrifugal pumps, air compressors, rotating machinery and various kitchen equipment. S/he installs and repairs campus signs when necessary, performs metal fabrications, and performs other similar duties as assigned.

The ideal candidate has experience working in a team environment and 5 or more years of related experience in institutional or industrial mechanical pump repair work.

Salary : $21.81 - $26.00 per hour

Essential Functions
  • Leads and oversees the troubleshooting and repairing of the following: centrifugal pumps, column pumps, submersible pumps, hot water and chilled water pumps, and condensate pumps, including installation of mechanical shaft seals, air compressors, rotating machinery, such as fans, blowers, and air handlers, medical/lab air compressors, hydraulic systems, valves and lab vacuum systems
  • Ensures machinery properly operates to full potential
  • Troubleshoots AC to DC voltage and 120V to 460V single and three phase power
  • Installs new pump-motor skids
  • Observes thoroughly the operation of pumps and checks for heat or vibrations
  • Performs routine maintenance and repairs of motors and valves such as gate, check, globe, etc.
  • Performs metal fabrication and makes weld repairs
  • Performs and validates precision coupling alignment
  • Performs dismantling of pumps to make repairs such as replacing bearings
  • Performs preventative maintenance on pump systems
  • Performs duties of site foreman as needed
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, drawings, schematics, and technical pump manuals
  • Supervises maintenance assistants and temporary personnel as needed
  • Performs all other duties as assigned
Additional Functions / Information
  • Evaluates motors and pumps for performance
  • Performs preventative maintenance on equipment
  • Works in conjunction with other trades to ensure the equipment is working properly
Required Qualifications
  • HS Diploma or equivalent
  • 5 years experience in institutional or industrial mechanical pump repairs
Skills Required
  • Ability to communicate clearly both verbal and written
  • Ability to utilize technical equipment used in troubleshooting and repairs
  • Deep knowledge on pneumatic system, including compressors, control valves, and panels
  • Working knowledge of the tools, practices, and methods necessary to maintain equipment
  • Very good diagnostic skills to determine pump failure (i.e., re-circulation, improper alignment, etc.)
  • Familiar with Wye and Delta three phase
  • Skilled user of OD and ID micrometers, measuring bearing housing and shafts
  • Knowledge of safe work practices and procedures
Preferred Qualifications
  • Vocational school or formal apprenticeship preferred with courses in machine shop, or other related trades
  • Five years of experience in the repair of facilities equipment
  • Valid Texas Driver’s License (or ability to obtain within 30 days of employment) required with no more than three moving violations or at-fault accidents within the past 36 months and no convictions or deferred dispositions for Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) or Driving Under the Influence (DUI) within the past 5 years
  • Knowledge of safe work practices and tool handling
  • Laser alignment certification
Physical Demands
  • Must be able to lift loads no greater than 50 lbs. Must be able to climb stairs, ladders, scaffolding, and work around confined areas with piping and wiring obstructions, as needed, to access equipment. Requires moderate to heavy physical activity, including bending, stooping, climbing, balancing, standing, and walking up to 8 hours per day. Occasionally required to enter utility tunnels and confined spaces
Work Conditions
  • Physical Environment:
    • Requires exposure to high-pressure boilers and steam piping, high voltage electricity, high noise levels, rotating and other potentially dangerous equipment
    • Requires work in mechanical rooms, tunnels, labs, attics, crawl spaces, non-conditioned spaces, and dusty, dirty, and wet conditions.
    • Requires personal protective equipment such as hearing protection, safety shoes, and safety glasses
  • Work Hours and Travel:
    • After hours work may be required or other work outside the regular schedule may be needed
    • Available on a continuous “on call” basis for response to problems and emergencies that affect campus operations
    • May require periodic travel to classes, conferences, and vendor sites as needed
