Position Summary

The Szablowski Lab for Noninvasive Neuroengineering at Rice University is looking to hire a research technician II in the fields of bioengineering and neuroengineering. We offer multidisciplinary training with a high degree of academic freedom in the choice of high-impact projects. The projects are available in the following fields:
  • Protein engineering for neuroscience
  • Noninvasive neuromodulation
  • Gene therapy for brain disorders
  • Behavioral neuroscience:
  • Of particular interest is a project will focus on noninvasive brain biopsy for early diagnosis and monitoring of Parkinson’s Disease that is done in collaboration with two faculty at Baylor College of Medicine (Drs. Sameer Sheth, and Norra Vannegas Arroyave). We expect to transition to a clinical trial within 2 years, providing an opportunity for a highly translational research training.
All candidates are encouraged to apply, and in particular candidates with experience in any of the following: neuroscience, serum marker analysis, Parkinson’s Disease, protein engineering.

Many of our projects will have a clear-cut path to clinical translation, taking advantage of our proximity to the country’s biggest medical center. Our department, Rice University’s Department of Bioengineering, is consistently ranked top 10 in the nation with resources and recognition aiding the success of our trainees. The department maintains close ties to nearby medical institutions including Baylor College of Medicine and MD Anderson Cancer Center. The campus is located in Houston – the fourth largest and one of the most diverse cities in the US that provides affordable living with warm weather all year round.

Essential Functions
  • Assists in conducting research and experiments
  • Collects, tracks and analyzes data using spreadsheets and databases
  • Assists in the setup of the laboratory and day-to-day laboratory technical operations including promoting safety, maintaining equipment, creating kits and preparing reagents
  • Monitors and maintains repository of clinical samples
  • Prepares procurement requests and orders materials and supplies, manages samples and stocks database, sets-up and manages experiments, and maintains research results for publications
  • Performs all other duties as assigned
Required Qualifications
  • HS diploma and 5 years of lab experience
    • Additional education may count towards years of experience
  • Proficiency in word processing and spreadsheet software, Microsoft Office Suite
  • Proficiency in relevant math and research skills
  • Good organization skills and strong attention to detail
  • Ability to listen and communicate (verbal, written)
  • Ability to work independently and in team environments
  • Ability to conduct evaluate and analyze data
  • Ability to maintain quality, safety and/or infection control standards
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in bioscience-related field and 3 years laboratory experience
  • Previous experience in working with rodents
