Research Specialist I



Position Summary

The Bashor laboratory uses synthetic biology approaches to engineer human cells for both basic science and translational purposes. A major focus of the Bashor lab is centered on the development of artificial gene regulatory circuits that enable cells to alter their behavior in response to specific external signals. This includes reprogramming human immune cells to respond therapeutically to specific disease-associated cues. An ideal research specialist has knowledge and experience in molecular cloning of plasmid DNA, mammalian cell culture, and flow cytometry. The research specialist will serve in a position as a researcher (75%) and a lab manager (25%). The research specialist will gain valuable research experience in the design, construction, and testing of genetic circuits used in ongoing projects that involve developing T cell and NK therapeutic applications with collaborators from the Texas medical center. Lab management duties will include assessing laboratory supply inventories, assisting in the ordering new reagents, and helping to organize laboratory protocols.

Essential Functions
  • Conducts plasmid sequence design, cloning, and validation
  • Conducts specialized research and experiments under supervision and independently
  • Collects and analyzes data using spreadsheets and databases
  • Communicates the results of research through verbal presentations, written reports, and written articles submitted for publication
  • Performs all other duties as assigned
Additional Functions / Information
  • Procures research materials and supplies for the laboratory
  • Manages laboratory and oversees the laboratory set-up
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in biology, cell biology, biochemistry, biophysics, bioengineering, or related
  • One year of laboratory experience
  • Skills Required
    • Listening, verbal and written communication, analytical, and research skills
    • Good scientific and numerical skills with meticulous attention to details and accuracy
    • Ability to work in a team enviornment, to participate actively, to collaborate and to motivate others in the lab
    • Critical thinking, technical, data collection and interviewing skills
    • Statistical and graphical analysis skills
    • Ability to maintain quality, safety and / or infection control standards
    • Ability to plan and schedule effectively
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience or familiarity molecular cloning of DNA constructs
  • Experience or familiarity with molecular biology, biochemistry, or cell biology
  • Some experience or familiarity with mammalian cell culture, plasmid cloning, maxi-prep/mini-prep, PCR, gel electrophoresis, and flow cytometry
