Position Summary

The Carbon Hub is a new center led by Rice University that will enable and accelerate the development and deployment of economically attractive and environmentally sustainable pathways to enhance the value of natural gas and light hydrocarbons with zero emissions. The Carbon Hub will be the focal point to nucleate the discourse, R&D efforts and policy making across academia, industry and non-profit (including governmental) organizations to identify highly efficient routes to valuable carbon materials and applications with the concurrent generation of hydrogen, and to establish new value, manufacturing and supply chains.

In collaboration with the carbon leadership board and chair, the executive director develops plans to achieve the mission, vision, and strategy of the organization and is responsible for directing the implementation of these plans. The executive director develops, initiates, and monitors all business development activities, to include (but not limited to): attracting new members and engaging community leaders; serving as a key liaison with internal and external constituents; assisting in developing and maintaining contacts and relationships for continued and expanded support of programs; and identifying, qualifying, and developing potential funding sources and opportunities that may help bring additional research funding to Carbon Hub activities. The executive director provides administrative management and leadership for the research and educational programs and manages the administrative workload. The executive director reports directly to the carbon leadership board and the chair and represents the chair as needed. The executive director oversees the Carbon Hub management team and directs their priorities. The executive director will establish, implement, and oversee the Carbon Hub’s activities, in alignment with the strategy and focus areas determined by the carbon leadership board and chair.

Essential Functions
  • Collaborates with faculty, University leadership and advisory board to develop, set, and execute the strategic goal and objectives of the center or institute
  • Represents the University at events across the community, state, national and international level to further the institute’s mission and goals
  • Responsible for oversight of the administrative and financial operations
  • Leads and directs the development of programs and initiatives
  • Identifies, qualifies and develops potential funding sources
  • Leads and directs the development and implementation of strategies and plans related to external relations, including fundraising, communications, events, marketing, etc.
  • Establishes and fosters collaborations, both domestic and international, between the institute, specific industries, and other universities
  • Fosters the development of interdisciplinary research nurturing collaborative research programs to connect individuals and researchers at other institutions at the national and international level
  • Performs all other duties as assigned
Required Qualifications
  • PhD or other Doctoral Degree in s cience, engineering or related field
  • 10 years or more of related e xperience with faculty, corporations, government agencies, NGOs, and research foundations
  • Demonstrated ability to translate strategy into actionable plans and overseeing execution
  • Has an established network of contacts in broad types of corporations and organizations
  • Entrepreneurial
  • Highly motivated and creative
  • Excellent communication skills both verbal and written
  • Ability to build and steward relationships
Preferred Qualifications
  • 15+ years of experience
  • Demonstrated experience in setting up and overseeing major research programs
  • Established network of executive contacts
  • Supervisory experience
  • Ability to influence decision-makers across all types of organizations
