Position Summary:
Supporting the very rapid growth of carbon markets will require the generation of new forms of carbon credits to meet the demand being created by companies pledging carbon neutrality. The generation of new forms of credits has the potential to expand the economic benefits of carbon trading into communities that have historically not been able to build wealth through markets.
This hybrid academic-NGO postdoc position is an opportunity to simultaneously build scholarly expertise in carbon market development and monitoring, while additionally building skills working with communities and nonprofits.
Essential Functions:
- Collaborate with Rice faculty and the BCarbon carbon credit certification team on the generation of new types of carbon removal and offset mechanisms
- Develop techniques that do not require land ownership
- Work with multiple stakeholders, including cities, other forms of local government, small businesses and community-focused NGOs
- Build scholarly expertise in carbon market development
- Assist with proposal development and student training as needed
- PhD in geoscience
- Strong understanding of ecosystem-scale carbon fluxes
- Ability to work with multiple stakeholders
- Background in biogeochemistry of carbon
- Strong communication skills
- Additional training in economics and/or experience working with community organizations
