The University of Chicago Divinity School seeks scholar(s) for one or more positions in the study of Rabbinic Judaism for an appointment date of July 1, 2023.  Rank and salary are open.  We welcome applications at the assistant professor, associate professor, and full professor ranks.

Applicants should possess broad knowledge of the Rabbinic period and literature in addition to specialized areas of inquiry, and command the languages that are essential to the field and relevant to the applicant’s research agenda. Strong applicants will be familiar with the Roman, Sasanian, and early Islamic imperial and religious contexts. They will be prepared both to train graduate students in the field and to offer inviting courses to the wider student body of the University, undergraduate as well as graduate. Candidates are expected to have the interest and ability to engage in interdisciplinary conversations with scholars of religion and other fields and areas within the Divinity School and throughout the University.

The Divinity School is the graduate professional school for the academic study of religion at the University of Chicago, a private research university. Faculty in the School teach Ph.D. students; Master’s level students in M.A., M.Div., and A.M.R.S. programs; and undergraduates in the College. Many faculty members hold associate appointments in humanities or social science departments and professional schools of the University. A normal teaching load is four courses per year on a quarter system.

Candidates must hold the Ph.D. degree in Rabbinic Judaism or a related field or discipline by the time of appointment. Candidates are encouraged to list any leadership or other distinctive experience in the field that is relevant to the position.

Review of applications will begin on September 1, 2022, and will continue until the position(s) is/are filled or the search is closed. Applicants should submit a cover letter, 2) a curriculum vita, 3) a teaching statement, 4) syllabi of courses they have designed, if applicable, 5) a statement articulating their future research agenda, and 6) a writing sample of 25-40 pages.  If applying at the assistant professor rank, applicants must also enter contact information for three recommenders whose letters of recommendation will be solicited through the Interfolio system.  Letters will be solicited for applicants at the senior ranks only if they are finalists.  Applications should be made online, at apply.interfolio.com/108977.  If you have any questions, contact Sara Bigger at sfbigger@uchicago.edu.

We seek a diverse pool of applicants who wish to join an academic community that places the highest value on rigorous inquiry and encourages diverse perspectives, experiences, groups of individuals, and ideas to inform and stimulate intellectual challenge, engagement, and exchange. The University’s Statements on Diversity are at https://provost.uchicago.edu/statements-diversity.
