Job Summary

The Interior Design program of the Antoinette Westphal College at Drexel University invites applications for a full-time teaching faculty position. Under the leadership of newly appointed Antoinette Westphal Dean, Jason Schupbach, the College seeks to expand its diversity and commitment to social justice and redress of structural racism. Antoinette Westphal College will lead in shaping new generations of designers, recognizing that interior design plays a pivotal role in the creation of equitable places to live, work, learn, and heal.

Augmented by an R1 research university, the College supports collaborates across a number of disciplines, especially the intersection of Interiors with issues of health and environmental sustainability. The program is part of the Department of Architecture, Design & Urbanism which includes professionally accredited programs in architecture and interiors as well as interdisciplinary graduate programs in design research and urban strategy. Located in the strikingly renovated URBN Center, the Interiors program has dedicated studio spaces and shares facilities with allied Antoinette Westphal programs including graphic design, product design, fashion design, and virtual reality.

The Interiors program maintains a prominent position within the academic and professional worlds, and is characterized by a focus on human experience, novel exploration of material and form, commitment to a sustainable future, and rigorous professional training. The program benefits from its prime location in Philadelphia, a culturally sophisticated and highly diverse metro area that is among the largest in the nation.

Drexel Interiors has one undergraduate and one graduate program that are nationally-ranked, CIDA-accredited programs supported by a dynamic university with a distinctive vision of community engagement. This position seeks to supplement the program’s strong and balanced faculty with a new hire who will work collaboratively and is committed to teaching the next generation of leaders in the field. The position is a 1-year non-tenure appointment, with the potential for a renewable multi-year contract. The program has a strong track record of supporting faculty through promotion, and this position should be understood as a long-term career opportunity.

Essential Functions
  • Teach undergraduate BS Interior Design and graduate MS Interior Architecture students.
  • Knowledge of CIDA accreditation requirements with specific experience in supporting administrative ability or experience will be viewed advantageously.
  • Teach three 10-week terms of 2-4 courses each term. Teaching will include a combination of interior design studios, seminars, and lecture courses at both undergraduate and graduate level.
  • Curriculum development and service to the department/college.
Required Qualifications
  • Minimum of a Master’s Degree in Interior Design.
  • Minimum of 3 years of professional and/or teaching experience.
  • Demonstrate research interests, professional activity, and/or creative work.
  • Previous teaching experience, administrative potential, and work well in collaboration.
  • Ability articulate the specific expertise they anticipate contributing to the program.
  • Demonstrated approach/experience in cross-over industry segments such as health sciences, senior/assisted living, public health, urbanism, equity design, social sustainability, education, etc.
  • Development of coursework related to health and well-being (aging in place, senior living/assisted living, health care design, rehabilitation, etc.).
  • Ability to develop/teach interdisciplinary design projects, courses, and curriculum.
  • NCIDQ certified, NCIDQ in progress, or NCIDQ-eligible within the 2022-2023 academic year.
  • Experience preparing for and participating in a CIDA accreditation process.
  • Understanding of CIDA standards.
  • Demonstrated approach to social justice, equity, and diversity in design.
  • Working knowledge and/or certification in LEED, WELL, Fitwel, or other design standards.
  • Membership in professional organizations such as ASID, IIDA, IDEC, etc.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Demonstrate engagement with issues of health, senior living/assisted living and well-being, which may include interdisciplinary work with health science disciplines (public health, nursing, etc.).
  • Experience in preparing for and participating in a CIDA accreditation.
  • Ability to contribute to the diversity of our program and engage issues of culture and identity in their work.
