Position Purpose

In collaboration with the Assistant Dean & Director of Residential Education, directs all aspects of the House Community Residential Education program to develop and administer positive and engaging communities and programs that support student success, foster integrative learning, offer opportunities for student growth and development, and nurture students to be responsible members of the residence hall system. Provides particular oversight and support of living-learning programs and academic initiatives. Supervises live-in professional staff.


Required Qualifications - Education and Yrs Exp

Masters plus 3-5 years' experience or equivalent combination of education and experience

Required Qualifications - Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

• Master’s Degree in Student Affairs or a Counseling-related discipline, or the equivalent.
• 4-6 years of progressive, relevant professional student affairs experience, preferably with a residential life focus, or the equivalent.
• Experience supervising undergraduate-level staff.
• Demonstrated cultural competence and proven effectiveness in serving the needs of a diverse undergraduate student population.
• Demonstrated experience in programmatic leadership, assessment, and evaluation.
• Familiarity with living-learning and/or special interest programs in residence halls.
• Experience working collaboratively with faculty.
• Mature judgment, planning, and problem-solving skills.
• Exceptional interpersonal and persuasive skills and ability to relate well and interact with students, faculty, parents and College administrators.
• Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and expertise with organizational systems and software.
• Ability to take initiative, balance competing demands, manage ambiguity, and make decisions under pressure.
• Understanding of academic institutional policies and politics.
• Good written communication and public speaking skills.
• Creative programming skills and strong supervisory and leadership ability.
• Familiarity with budget administration.
• Ability to adapt personal and professional schedule to the College’s year-round calendar.
• Demonstrated ability to apply student development theory and practice in an evolving and complex residential setting.
• Fosters respectful communication and collaboration.

Preferred Qualifications

• Master’s degree in a related field.
• Experience supervising graduate or professional staff.
• Familiarity with highly selective, liberal arts institution(s).
• Experience managing living-learning and/or special interest programs in residence halls.
• Experience with first-year residential curricular models.
• Aptitude for use of web and social media.
• Experience with OrgSync, StarRez, Maxient, and Excel software systems.

Key Accountabilities


In partnership with House Professors, Assistant Directors, and campus stakeholders, oversees, develops, supports, markets, and evaluates the House Community’s comprehensive living-learning programs to engage students in the intellectual life of the college.

Percentage Of Time



Supervises, guides, trains and evaluates several full time professional live-in staff members to ensure effective implementation of the residential program in assigned residence halls.

Percentage Of Time



As a member of the departmental leadership team, represents the department through committee membership, event participation, and on-call responsibilities, and manages department-wide programming, procedures, and policies to ensure consistency and quality across the residential communities in fulfilling the departmental mission and vision.

Percentage Of Time



Coordinates hiring, training, and role definition of live-in advisors and student employees in the living learning communities, and Resident Fellows for the House communities.

Percentage Of Time



Manages budgets related to the living learning programs and academic initiatives in order to ensure responsible stewardship of fiscal resources in fulfilling departmental and institutional priorities.

Percentage Of Time



In collaboration with the Undergraduate Housing Office, Residential Operations, and individual program staff, ensures that housing assignment processes and facilities support program goals and student needs.

Percentage Of Time



Oversees and evaluates the First Year Residential Experience program to ensure achievement of programmatic outcomes and effective coordination with other departmental and institutional programs.

Percentage Of Time



Oversees and evaluates the departmental inclusivity and diversity plan and implements best practices to maximize inclusion and diversity in the residence halls.

Percentage Of Time



Addresses and resolves crises, problematic student behavior, and community issues to ensure the best possible quality of life in the residence halls.

Demonstrates a commitment to diversity, inclusion, and cultural awareness through actions, interactions, and communications with others.
