General Summary

The Certified Pharmacy Technician II is responsible for performing tasks involving the dispensing, reconciliation, distribution and charging of drugs. This position assists the pharmacist in maintaining quality pharmacy services in compliance with laws set forth by the Ohio State Board of Pharmacy to ensure in proper storage, compounding, packaging, labeling, and record keeping associated with drugs. The technician will collaborate and communicate with patients, caregivers, health care professionals and the public.

Medication Dispensing and Reconciliation -Unit Dose Area
  • Maintains the physical layout of the drugs in the unit dose dispensing area assuring that it is well stocked.
  • Assists in processing new drug orders and first doses.
  • Deliver medications in accordance with hospital schedule and brings back any returned drugs as required.
  • Assists with the billing of patient floor stock supplies and medications.
  • Pulls and labels medications for the pharmacist to check for the automated dispensing cabinets and replenishes utilizing bar-code technology
  • Answers routine phone inquiries and forwards other inquiries to a registered pharmacist for action.
  • Assists in the delivery of medications to patient care areas, either by tubing or hand delivery.
  • Repackages and bar-codes medications in unit of use formulations utilizing automation technology
  • Utilize carousel technology for order processing
  • Utilize carousel inventory technology for outdate checking
  • Screen medication orders for quality assurance procedures
  • Performs inventory control including ordering and stocking
  • Consistently demonstrates great customer service in dealing with patients, students, staff, others and/or the public.
  • Stocks automated dispensing cabinets, crash carts and floor stock.
  • Perform medication history by talking with patient and/or family members
  • Contact pharmacy or healthcare facilities to gather medication dispensing or administration information
  • Compile collected data to describe patient medication list
  • Record and reconcile patient home medication list in electronic medical record
  • Clarify and document patient medication allergies and reactions

Medication Dispensing- Compounding
  • Provides technical assistance in the compounding of non-sterile medication preparations in accordance with USP 795 standards
  • Provides technical assistance in the compounding of parenteral admixture products including hazardous drugs assuring USP 797/ USP 800 compliance
  • Screen medication orders for quality assurance procedures
  • Performs inventory control including ordering and stocking
  • Performs proper cleaning of the IV & Ante room according to schedule
  • Initials the cleaning (IV room) and daily check sheets

General/Other
  • Entering and retrieving information from patient profile or database.
  • Adheres to hospital policies and procedures as well as addresses patient safety, performance improvement, and quality of care issues.
  • Performs daily functions within the inpatient pharmacy.
  • Assists in the training and orientation of new personnel or learners as requested.
  • Attends and participates in departmental meetings and offer suggestions on operational improvements or changes.
  • Contributes to the performance improvement initiatives of the hospital and pharmacy department
  • Aids in other areas of the department as necessary
  • Keeps records as required by law
  • Respects the confidentiality of patient data
  • Performs monthly unit inspections as assigned.

Qualifications/Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (Indicate minimum required to qualify or perform this job.)
  • Must hold current and unrestricted registration with the Ohio State Board of Pharmacy as a Certified Pharmacy Technician.
  • Technician certification required by Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or equivalent
  • Requires 2 years’ experience.
  • Ability to communicate and interact effectively, professionally and courteously with other health care professionals, patients and members of the University community.
  • Knowledge of metric system, along with names, strength and dosage forms of medications, and common medical abbreviations.
  • Recent relevant pharmacy experience preferred.
  • Strong computer skills required.
  • Knowledge of purchasing and inventory management skills preferred.
  • Knowledge of charging and billing preferred.
  • Must provide excellent customer service and present a positive public image.
  • Must be able to withstand pressure due to work volume, interruptions, pace, job variety with an expected degree of accuracy.
Physical Requirements:

  • Visual acuity of 20/20 or corrected to 20/20 including color vision when applicable.
  • Ability to hear (with or without aides).
  • Ability to orally communicate.
  • Good manual dexterity.
  • Ability to push, pull, roll, and transfer/lift 50 pounds occasionally.
  • Ability to stand, walk constantly.
  • Ability to bend, reach, stoop, kneel occasionally.


  • Working Conditions

    This employee works in a busy hospital setting requiring a high degree of professionalism and precision.

    It can be stressful at times. The employee in this position is expected to alternately deal with a variety of tasks including customer service, phone calls and dispensing functions. Works in pharmacy department primarily, may have to go to warehouse, storerooms, and nursing units. May be exposed to hazardous materials. Work is often of a physical nature. Physical demands include standing or walking for most of the working day and lifting not more than 50 pounds.
