The Director of Education and Innovation will play an essential role in improving and assessing teaching and learning in undergraduate, graduate, and other educational programs across the university. The Director of Education and Innovation will create, coordinate, and implement effective programs to improve student-learning outcomes by enhancing instruction, faculty mentorship, and promoting inclusive teaching throughout the university. The Director of Education and Innovation will oversee the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) and work closely with faculty and academic leaders on matters of instructional innovation and professional development.

By staying informed of state-of-the-art educational strategies, trends in higher education and industry, as well as educational technology, the Director of Education and Innovation advises university leadership and promotes the transformation of teaching and learning at the university. The Director of Education and Innovation conducts need assessments, envisions, leads, and participates in educational technology projects, including projects associated with emerging technologies or University strategic educational technology initiatives. The Director of Education and Innovation also envisions, develops, and leads significant outreach activities on the topics of teaching with technology in higher education to the South community. The incumbent must assure that the South University philosophy: quality services to students, faculty, development, growth, involvement, and recognition of employees; sound economic principles; and environment which is conducive to innovation, positive thinking and expansion is considered in carrying out the duties and responsibilities of this position. This position is remote.


  • Execute on initiatives aimed to improve student's academic journey, including the classroom experience, faculty effectiveness and student outcomes. Utilize quantitative and qualitative data to inform and prioritize high impact initiatives that facilitates effective teaching and learning through improvements with people, processes and technology.
  • Manage the Digital Resources Team members and processes to ensure: timely course development and updates; the learning management system (D2L Brightspace) and digital resources are maximized to support student success and faculty engagement; digital textbooks align with course outcomes and are accessible for students and faculty; and students, faculty and support staff are well trained in navigating all digital resources. Ensure regular collaboration with all vendors to stay up to date on features and benefits of all systems. Seek opportunities for improvements and enhancements to learning resources.
  • Oversee the build and maintenance of interactive learning content and course shells for online and hybrid courses; collaborate with academic leadership and subject matter experts to develop and implement curriculum content and recommended the appropriate blend of pedagogy and technology based on learning theory and best practices
  • Assess opportunities to formulate strategies for leveraging technology to transform teaching and learning; Analyze data to detect barriers to student success, such as course deficiencies, teaching effectiveness, student resource utilization, and collaborate across the Colleges to develop strategic programs or initiatives to mitigate these barriers. Continue to collect data to drive continuous improvement and document results; share results with appropriate parties.
  • Provide strategic direction for the Center for Teaching and Learning; create targeted faculty development trainings to support faculty needs identified as areas of improvement from evaluations and audits conducted and anecdotal information; Mentor and provide additional training/support for new faculty and faculty demonstrating the need for additional support. Track faculty participation in professional development.
  • Lead the Digital Resources Team and Faculty Training Specialists to create and execute a standardized faculty on-boarding, and deliver ongoing faculty development program; ensure the Learning Management Systems and Student Information System are being leveraged to maximize faculty engagement, student learning and retention to graduation. Regularly explore innovative opportunities for improvements, or new technology and resources to improve student learning and outcomes.
  • Facilitate a comprehensive program of professional development opportunities to advance teacher-scholar innovation across all facets of faculty life. This includes identifying and coordinating professional development offerings, both in-person and online, and peer evaluation of teaching.Plan and execute an annual Educators' Summit to promote pedagogical best practices and effective online teaching modalities; coordinate faculty mentorship programs and recognition activities.
  • Provide leadership on strategic initiatives including High Impact Practice implementation, curriculum mapping, and the integration of career competencies into courses and programs.
  • Seek and maintain Joint Accreditation and manage Continuing Education Program across the institution.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for academic leadership, subject matter experts relative to project management, reporting, troubleshooting, and escalation when necessary; Manage course development projects from needs assessment through hand-off to production for upload to the learning management system.
  • Work closely with third party vendors to manage new and existing digital content solutions. Manage third party relationships and invoicing operations
  • Assist stakeholders to ensure that online and blended courses are compliant with current standards of the Americans with Disabilities Act.
  • Remain current on emerging learning technologies and best practices in online and blended learning.

  • Master's degree in an appropriate field; doctoral degree preferred.
  • Passion for learning and the role of learning in professional education.
  • Demonstrated record of excellence in academic project design, implementation, and management.
  • Proven leadership skills in articulating and executing a motivating vision.
  • Demonstrated ability to form productive collaborations with faculty, staff, and administrators.
  • Ability to generate professional development opportunities aimed at enhancing instructional practices that will engage faculty for whom teaching is one of many responsibilities.
  • Ability to develop, plan, and implement short- and long-range goals, and manage multiple priorities and initiatives.
  • Responsible skill in budget preparation and fiscal management.
  • Excellent written communication skills, including the ability to disseminate detailed data to different audiences clearly and effectively.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with student and staff populations
  • Superior organization, prioritization, and self-motivation skills
  • Extensive understanding or background working with a diverse group of student and faculty populations
  • Proven leadership abilities and a commitment to excellence
  • Ability and willingness to work in a cross-cultural environment
  • Strong computer skills. MS Office Suite.
  • Ability to interact effectively as either a leader or as a member of a team and work collaboratively with other departments
  • Ability to listen to customers (e.g. staff, etc.) and to understand and respond positively to their requests
  • Ability to adapt to changing assignments and multiple priorities
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and successfully meet deadlines
