Job Summary

Reporting to the Clinic Manager, the Registered Nurse performs a variety of medical services for students at the Student Health Center under the general supervision of the Medical Chief of Staff. They work according to established protocols to provide direct nursing care for registered students, care for work-related injuries of University faculty and staff, and limited first aid for campus visitors.

Key Responsibilities
  • Triage-work under protocol direction and with occasional direction from the Clinic Manager
  • Take vital signs
  • Record pertinent symptoms and obtain a brief medical history on the majority of patients seen at the Health Center
  • Make appropriate entries in patients’ electronic medical records
  • Administer immunizations, TB tests, and certain medications under the guidelines of standardized procedures
  • Order x-rays and lab work (as needed) according to a standing order policy
  • Prepare and assist patients for examinations
  • Assist physicians and nurse practitioners with procedures and give treatment as ordered, including IV therapy, IM injections (Depo Provera, Ceftriaxone, etc.), and oral medications (Zithromax, etc.)
  • Complete semi-skilled tasks such as electrocardiograms, vision and hearing screening tests, and spirometry
  • Answer patient questions, including via telephone, consulting with physicians, nurse practitioners, administrators, or other staff as needed
  • Clean and stock work area with medication or supplies and notify the Clinic Manager if stock is short, depleted, or expired
  • Sterilize equipment and maintain supplies and instruments in order
  • Daily housekeeping responsibilities
  • Provide health education and counseling to patients
  • Assist the Clinic Manager in conducting new hire orientation, training new employees, and supervising clinical aide
  • Act on behalf of Nursing Lead if so designated in her/his absence
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Thorough knowledge of general methods, procedures, and practices of an outpatient medical facility
  • Working knowledge of applicable state and federal laws and regulations pertaining to registered nursing and the scope of practice limitations of clinic support staff
  • Thorough knowledge of medical supplies and equipment used in nursing practice; and the uses and effects of medications and narcotics
  • Thorough knowledge of professional nursing principles
  • Working knowledge of English grammar, punctuation, and spelling
  • Working knowledge of software applications used in the Health Center
  • Ability to effectively apply nursing knowledge and demonstrate proper techniques and skills in performing nursing duties
  • Ability to perform accurately in a detail-oriented environment
  • Ability to effectively apply specialized nursing skills
  • Ability to accurately observe and record symptoms, behaviors, and reactions to treatments in order to make a nursing diagnosis;
  • Ability to handle multiple work priorities, organize, and plan work and projects
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and appropriately handle sensitive communications with employees and external agencies.
  • Ability to lift twenty (20) pounds. Moving, lifting or transferring of patients may involve lifting of up to fifty (50) pounds, as well as assist with weights of more than one-hundred (100) pounds
  • Ability to stand for extended periods
Required Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Completion of a professional nursing program in an approved school of nursing or by additional preparation as approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing and one year of progressively responsible full-time professional nursing experience or equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge and abilities
  • Must possess and maintain a valid license as a Registered Nurse in the State of California
  • Must possess and maintain certification in CPR/AED
Preferred Qualifications
  • Two or more years post-graduate RN experience in student healthcare


Compensation

Classification: Registered Nurse II
Anticipated Hiring Range: $5,981/month - $6,368/month
CSU Salary Range: $4,083/month - $7,878/month
