Job Summary:

This position is in the Department of Physics Instrument Shop and works on development, manufacture, assembly and testing of complex scientific instrumentation.

Responsibilities:

Performs as a highly skilled machinist in the design, creation, and/or modification of unique, highly intricate, and precise scientific equipment, industrial equipment, and mechanical systems. Maintains and modifies standard laboratory and specialized research equipment or instrumentation to be used in laboratory and other research environments.
  • 70% Designs, develops, fabricates, tests, and maintains highly specialized instruments, components, and mechanical systems
  • 15% Assists with the selection of materials and components with respect to physical properties, cost, and established guidelines
  • 10% Maintains, repairs, and operates highly complex and/or specialized instrumentation, identifies damages and communicates repair or replacement needs to the appropriate entities
  • 5% Trains staff and stakeholders on processes and procedures

Education:

Preferred
Associate's Degree from an accredited machining program.

Preferred
Combined substantive professional/practice experience and a degree at least one level above the level of instruction, or otherwise approved as qualified by the Dean
Journey level experience and/or Bachelor's Degree with substantial machining experience.

Qualifications:

New machinists with associate's degree welcome to apply.
Good working knowledge of CNC machining, CNC programming, and general shop machinery.
Good working knowledge of CAD/CAM software and basic computer skills A thorough knowledge of general scientific laboratory procedures.
Good working knowledge of mechanical drawing techniques and ability to create standardized blueprints.
Effective oral and written communication skills.
