Job Summary:
The Assistant Director of Multicultural Student Affairs (Black Diasporta/African-American Content Expert) is expected to manage, develop, and assess programs and activities focusing on intersectional identity development, and leadership efficacy and capacity building offered by Multicultural Student Affairs, one of three areas within Campus Inclusion & Community. Additionally, the AD will as a resource to the university community on the experiences Black Diaspora and African-American college students utilizing an intersectional framework, student development theory, research, and best practices.

This position directly serves Northwestern students, and partners with the Northwestern community at large to support marginalized students, especially Black Diaspora and African American students.

Pay Range: The salary range for the Assistant Director of Multicultural Student Affairs position is $58,000-$60,000.

Principal Accountabilities:

  • (20%) Develop, manage, and assess programs and activities focusing on intersectional identity development, and leadership efficacy and capacity building. Utilize assessment data to inform and improve initiatives.
  • (20%) Work with campus partners, especially those within Campus Inclusion & Community to serve as an educator, advocate, and thought-leader on the unique needs, experiences, and challenges faced by Black Diaspora and African American students. This may include but it not limited to serving on committees, working groups, task forces, and trainings.
  • (15%) Design, coordinate, and assess workshops for students along with the rest of the MSA staff, including but not limited to, Association of Black Leaders (ABL), The JOY- Black Graduation Ceremony, Black History Month, and the annual Harambee celebration.
  • (10%) Serve as the adviser of For Members Only (FMO): NU’s Black Student Alliance, assisting them with programming initiatives and continued growth.
  • (10%) Train, supervise, and evaluate a Graduate Assistant to support programs and activities.
  • (5%) Advise students on successfully navigating the university by connecting them with appropriate campus and community resources.
  • (5%) Manage an annual budget and other resources for programming efforts.
  • (5%) In conjunction with the Director of MSA, serve as departmental liaison to Northwestern University Black Alumni Association (NUBAA).
  • (5%) Foster purposeful partnerships and serve on various committees within the Division of Student Affairs and across the university, including academic entities, to create interdisciplinary efforts in support of student , sense of belonging for marginalized students, and social justice.
  • (5%) Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A master's degree in College Student Development, Higher Education Administration, or a related field. Or equivalent experience with collegial student populations, including a bachelor’s degree.
  • A minimum of two years full-time experience at college/university in student affairs or a related field.
  • Experience developing, executing, and assessing educational programming for college students.
  • Experience advising college students, individually and as members of student organizations, with an emphasis on identity development and leadership skills.
  • Commitment to continued personal and professional development.

Minimum Competencies:

  • Must work well as part of a team and independently.
  • Strong familiarity with critical social theories and models of leadership.
  • Strong familiarity with current research and cultural informed practices related to the positive identity development of college students a part of the Black Diaspora.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, as well as general interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to collaboratively partner with a multitude of stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Strong understanding of best practices for the assessment of student learning outcomes.
  • Strong presentation/facilitation skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Suite and Box.com collaborative tools.
