Job Description

The Office of Research and Innovation provides services and support that help faculty, staff, and students from across nine colleges and seven research institutes, plan, perform, and commercialize groundbreaking research.

The Office of Research and Innovation is seeking a creative, motivated, storyteller to write and edit stories/news about research awards, impact, results, and success at Virginia Tech to be shared internally and externally. Reporting to the senior director of marketing and communications for the Office of Research and Innovation, the writer/editor is an integral part of the team who will work independently and collaboratively with research institute communicators, college communicators, and university relations.

The writer/editor will research, connect with sources, write, and edit stories, web content, speeches, and other content; develop high level communications and amplification plans; support various storytelling platforms; establish and share best practices for research writing; and develop branded messaging for marketing campaigns, event collateral, web communications, and more. The writer/editor will also support internal communications that enhance the quality of the Virginia Tech researcher’s experience and needs. The ideal candidate will be a critical thinker, connecting stories and messaging to university research priorities across various platforms. The candidate will collaborate with university relations visual media team photographers and videographers to pitch and support the creation of assets such as videos and photos for the Virginia Tech News site, the Virginia Tech homepage, the research website, social media channels, newsletters, and various associated platforms. The writer/editor will support communicators in Virginia Tech’s university-level research institutes, centers, and initiatives through the review and editing of content. The writer/editor will also work with university media relations to draft pitches and tip sheets to support external reach of research impact.

The writer/editor will understand and use university style guidelines and AP style in writing researcher profiles, social media posts, news stories, web content, leadership speeches, and talking points. Critical to the success of this position is organization and meeting deadlines, from daily assignments to longer-term projects.

Required Qualifications

Portfolio that demonstrates excellent writing and editing skills and versatility in a range of writing styles, with the ability to make complex stories interesting and understandable
● Demonstrated copy editing experience
● Experience in writing for multiple platforms
● Experience writing and editing in Associated Press style
● Excellent interpersonal skills
● Experience interviewing a wide range of sources
● Experience using publishing platforms; Microsoft Office and Google Drive applications
● Ability to work under pressure, prioritize competing assignments, and organize work to meet deadlines
● Ability to work individually and within a team environment, alongside fellow writers, editors, photographers, designers, video producers, marketers, and stakeholders in order to accomplish objectives
● Bachelor’s degree in journalism, English, communications, or related discipline
