Sailing Club Coach

Position Summary:
The Sailing Club Coach shall provide coaching services to the Middlebury College Sailing Club and attend and supervise all practices and competitions, including travel to and coaching at regattas and assisting club members with their sailing technique to the end of improving their sailing ability. As a student governed club, the coach will work with team leaders to support individual development and the growth and of the club
Essential Functions:
Offer is contingent upon successful completion of a criminal background check.
* Coordinate racing practice 3-4 days per week -Write practice plans, season curriculum and team goals -Conduct “chalk talks” and strategy lessons
* Convene or attend team meetings as necessary
* Direct training drills on the water -Organize and run practice races and team scrimmages
* Organize weekend regattas -Assign sailors to weekend regattas
* Coordinate weekend travel arrangements in collaboration with student leaders
* Work with student leaders to direct the Middlebury Cup Regatta; Serve as Race Committee chair to execute a successful trophy level regatta
* Weekend coaching at away regattas -Travel with “A Team” racers to top scoring events in New England
* Facilitate team growth and improvement -Serve as outside authority figure and mentor to students -Work with top racers to hone their skills and become more competitive in higher level regattas -Teach fundamentals of racing to new team members to develop their abilities and confidence
* Organize and instruct sailing PE classes
* Assist the club leadership in budget administration
* Oversee the Sailing trips during the MiddView trips program

Qualifications
Education:
Bachelor’s Degree Required
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledgable in current best practices for on-water coaching and risk management; student organization advising; club administration; Student development
Experience:
Required:
* Extensive personal sailing experience
* At least 2 years coaching experience, preferrably at the collegiate level
* Current First Aid and CPR certifications
* US Sailing Small Boat Coaching (Level I at minimum)
Preferred:
* US Sailing Small Boat Instructor Trainer
Physical Demands:
Sailing is a physically demanding activity, requiring lifting of heavy objects, work in extreme weather conditions, and in and around water.
