Job Description:
The Laboratory Coordinator for the College of Science, Engineering & Technology's Biological Sciences Department is responsible for the supervision, direction, mentoring and training of graduate level Teaching Assistants assigned to teach a variety of Biological Sciences laboratory sections. The Coordinator will also recommend and assist with the creation and/or update of laboratory exercises and student requirements. Oversight, management and maintenance of the laboratory classrooms, including supplies (including culture media and bacterial cultures) and equipment, is also required. In addition, the Coordinator will teach laboratory sections and provide advice and counsel to the respective students within those course sections.

Required Qualifications:
  • Master’s Degree or higher in Biological Sciences, Microbiology, or a sub-discipline of Biology. (Conferred on an official transcript at the time of application.)
  • Minimum one (1) year experience teaching undergraduate Biological Sciences and/or microbiology labs at a College or University, which may include related graduate/teaching assistantship.





Preferred Qualifications:
  • Demonstrated commitment to fostering a diverse working and learning environment.
  • Strong background or experience in Microbiology
  • Strong background or experience in General Biology
  • Knowledge of experimental procedures and design related to microbiology
  • Expertise or experience in laboratory setup for undergraduate microbiology and general biology courses
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise teaching assistants, or strong potential for successful supervision
  • Knowledge of safety procedures concerning media preparation; sterilization, and propagation and maintenance of bacterial/fungal/phage cultures
  • Experience with basic chemical solution preparation, culture media preparation, and safety
  • Knowledge or experience of laboratory equipment maintenance and troubleshooting equipment issues
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and presentation skills





Other Requirements:
  • Work safely at all times, which includes but is not limited to, participating and completing all required safety trainings, as well as performing all job tasks in accordance with Minnesota State University, Mankato policies and procedures utilizing appropriate tools, equipment and personal protective equipment.
  • Assignments may include evening laboratory sections taught by the individual, or supervision of a teaching assistant (TA) that teaches a night lab. It is possible certain laboratory prep may need to be done the evening before (i.e. Sunday, for a Monday lab.)
  • May need to move items weighing up to 50 lbs.
  • Work Location: Based on the essential functions of this positions, MMB Policy #1422, and University policies relating to flexible work, this position is not eligible for flexible work and will report to MSU, Mankato campus, 100% of the time.

The Department of Biological Sciences has 700 undergraduate students pursuing BS degrees in Biology, Medical Laboratory Sciences, Biotechnology, Environmental Science, and Agriculture Science and 45 graduate students seeking MS degrees in Biology and Environmental Sciences. The Department currently has over 20 tenure-track faculty.
