Pediatric Transplant Hepatologist / Medical Director

The Division of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition at the University of Utah School of Medicine has an immediate opening for an experienced Pediatric Transplant Hepatologist to serve as Medical Director of Pediatric Liver Disease and Transplantation. The successful candidate will be a member of the Division of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition in the Department of Pediatrics, University of Utah Spencer F. Eccles School of Medicine. This individual will provide outpatient and inpatient care for patients with liver disease, patients awaiting transplantation, and patients following their liver transplantation; will lead quality improvement and protocol development and maintenance for the liver disease and transplant program; will serve as the UNOS-designated liver transplant physician; and will be expected to participate in overall strategic development of the Primary Children’s Liver Care Center. Although the primary focus of this position is clinical service, there is an expectation for academic work, including education, investigation, administration, as well as advocacy.

Clinical activities are carried out at Primary Children’s Hospital (PCH), which is a 289-bed Children’s Hospital in Salt Lake, City, Utah.  In 2024, a second PCH campus is scheduled to open in Lehi, Utah.  The Pediatric Liver Care Center serves the largest geographic catchment area in the United States, with a diverse mix of patients from Utah, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Wyoming, and New Mexico.  The liver transplant program has performed >280 liver transplants since its inception (>10% are altruistic or related living donors), with 72 liver transplants performed in the last 5 years.  The program has three pediatric hepatobiliary surgeons who perform advanced surgical procedures and four providers with Pediatric Transplant Hepatology Certificates of Added Qualification.  The program has seven transplant coordinators and two advanced practice clinicians.  Additional programs include hematopoietic stem cell, kidney and cardiac transplantation programs.  Neither small bowel nor lung transplantations are performed at Primary Children’s.  It is one of the only centers in the country with a pediatric-specific ERCP / advanced endoscopy program performed at the Children’s Hospital.

The Division currently has 15 physicians, four advanced practice clinicians, four registered nurses, and three pediatric GI fellows.  The Division will expand to >20 faculty in the next 3 years.  The Division has all pediatric gastroenterology, hepatology and nutrition clinical services represented except for small bowel transplantation.  Additional programs include a gastrointestinal Motility Disorders Center, a multidisciplinary IBD program with close collaboration with an IBD surgery, close collaboration with the Cystic Fibrosis Center, Food Allergy and Eosinophilic Disorders Clinic, the Esophageal and Airway Treatment Center, a Feeding and Swallowing Center, a comprehensive nutrition center, an Aerodigestive Clinic, a Home Enteral Feeding Transitions program (post-NICU) and a multidisciplinary Colorectal Center.

The University of Utah is a productive center for pediatric liver disease clinical research.  It is one of only 13 members of the NIH-funded Childhood Liver Disease Research Network (Children), prospectively studying biliary atresia, cholestatic liver disorders, and mitochondrial liver disease in a multicenter network.  The center participates in the SPLIT registry and the Children’s Oncology Group, as well as multicenter clinical trials in biliary atresia and acute liver failure.  The University of Utah is also the central site for the Pediatric PSC Consortium and has new research programs in newborn screening for biliary atresia.  More generally, the Department of Pediatrics is a site for the Neonatal Network, the Pediatric Heart Network, the Pediatric Cardiac Genetics Consortium, and the Utah Data Coordinating Center.  The University of Utah is home to the Utah Clinical & Translational Science Institute (CTSI), the Huntsman Cancer Institute, and the Utah Center for Genetic Discovery.

The Department of Pediatrics is committed to the career development of healthcare leaders and offers multiple opportunities for leadership training.  The Intermountain Healthcare Delivery Institute offers the nationally recognized Advanced Training Program in Continuous Quality Improvement.  Additionally, the University of Utah offers Executive MBA and Masters Healthcare Administration programs.  Department Faculty members have successfully completed these programs and used the training in their leadership roles.

Qualified candidates must have demonstrable evidence of leadership experience.  Applicants must have successfully completed a Pediatrics Residency and a Pediatric Gastroenterology Fellowship and be Board Certified in Pediatric Gastroenterology.  A Certificate of Added Qualification in Pediatric Transplant Hepatology is preferred, though if not held, the successful candidate must satisfy the criteria to serve as the UNOS-designated Liver Transplant Physician.  The selected candidate will be appointed to a faculty position in the Department of Pediatrics on the Clinical or Tenure track at the academic level commensurate with experience and qualifications.

The Department and University offers a competitive salary and an unmatched benefits program, including non-contributory retirement contributions of 20.2% of annual salary that vests immediately.  The Department offers a faculty development and mentoring program designed to help faculty succeed in translational or basic research.

The new Salt Lake International Airport opened in 2021 and is a major airline hub with direct flights to most North American cities and daily direct flights to multiple European cities.
