KCUR 89.3

Job Description

KCUR 89.3 is looking for a journalist to lead our popular daily morning newsletter, The Early Bird, to help manage our social media accounts and participate in the development of additional newsletters as KCUR continues to grow.

Reporting to the Audience Editor, this is an entry level position, a perfect opportunity for emerging journalists who are looking to get started in the digital field and are passionate about public radio. It may require some weekend work.

KCUR is home to several news collaborations dedicated to covering the Kansas City area and the Midwest at large, as well as an audience development team tasked with expanding and strengthening our relationships with these communities -- on air, online and in person.

As an audience producer, you will be key to KCUR’s continued growth. You must be a team player with sharp news judgment, an adherence to journalistic ethics, a curiosity and excitement about online communities, and a knack for collaboration in a friendly and often fast-paced environment.

Working with editors and other members of the audience development team, you will maintain KCUR’s day-to-day presence on our existing social media platforms — primarily Facebook, Twitter and Instagram — and help us expand into emerging spaces. You will also curate KCUR stories for our daily newsletter, The Early Bird.

While this is not a reporting role, the audience producer will be a critical part of any breaking news situation, making sure KCUR’s audiences are up to date with the latest and most accurate information on the appropriate platforms. The audience producer also helps serve as KCUR’s eyes and ears online, flagging breaking news or other potential stories for the newsroom, and helping deliver audience feedback to the appropriate place.

Daily duties include:
  • Curate and manage The Early Bird, KCUR’s daily morning newsletter
  • Manage KCUR’s social media accounts on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. This involves working with the audience development team, and occasionally editors from the newsroom, to maintain a consistent social voice and presence, and to find creative ways to promote KCUR series and investigations.
  • Work with KCUR Studios on social media promotion for KCUR podcasts, including Kansas City Today and A People’s History of Kansas City
  • Create visual graphics from templates for Instagram.
Minimum Qualifications

A Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience and at least 2 years of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience managing social media accounts for a media organization (local and college level accepted)
  • Strong writing and editing skills
  • Knowledge of AP style
  • Familiarity with social media management tools and content management systems
  • Breaking news experience
  • Knowledge of the Kansas City region
  • Familiarity with public radio
  • Experience with Emma, MailChimp or other newsletter platforms
  • Proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite programs such as Photoshop or Audition is a plus
Full Time/Part Time

This is a full time, benefit eligible position.

KCUR offers competitive benefits and a flexible work environment, and participates in the UMKC’s Total Reward program . Benefits include health, dental and vision insurance with generous paid vacation, personal and sick time.

Salary

Up to $18.50/hr, commensurate with experience, education, and internal equity.

UMKC Statement on Diversity

Diversity, equity and inclusion are central to the UMKC mission as an urban-serving institution. Kansas City is a particularly diverse city, including African, African American, Asian, German, Irish, Italian, Latino, Mediterranean, Middle Eastern, Native American and Slavic communities. Such ethnic diversity, in addition to our thriving neighborhoods of the Westside, Northeast Kansas City and the Eastside, fosters creativity, connection and innovation, which is showcased across the region. Major attractions such as the Annual Ethnic Enrichment Festival, the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum, the Filipino Cultural Center, the American Jazz Museum, Guadalupe Centers and Mattie Rhodes and Kansas City Irish Fest are a small sample of the many ways our diverse city enriches us.

For the reasons enumerated above, UMKC’s strategic plan prioritizes our commitment to multiculturalism, globalism, diversity and inclusion. The university’s values call upon its faculty, staff, students and community to position themselves as global citizens who seek out, embrace and celebrate the many benefits of diversity. UMKC received the Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) Award in 2019 in recognition of our continued commitment to equity and inclusion. Such commitment is demonstrated across teaching, service and research. We welcome applicants to share in our commitment to these core values and know that you will quickly understand the beauty of calling Kansas City your home.
