POSITION PURPOSE

Whitman is committed to providing high-quality, comprehensive and relevant career advising to our students and alumni. In addition, Whitman prides itself on providing creative and timely programming to give students exposure to the enormous array of professional options available to Whitman graduates.

This position will allow the College to effectively support the quality and increasing number of internship resources for students. They will oversee all functions for the College's funded internship offerings, development of new programs, and student preparation for experiences in both college-funded & non-funded internships. The Assistant Director will also expand the types and ways that students access, secure and succeed in meaningful professional experiences in the United States and around the world. This position will collaborate broadly with faculty, external college constituencies, local community partners and CCEC staff members to develop opportunities for community-based and curriculum-connected internships.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES
  1. Oversee all aspects of CCEC internship programs to support student experiential learning
    1. Manage existing Whitman internship programs with assistance from CCEC Programs and Budget Coordinator and student staff to ensure programs are accessible to all students; including the Whitman Internship Grant (WIG)
    2. Collaborate with campus colleagues to ensure WIG and additional programs meet needs of international student body (accordance with F-1 and J-1 student visa regulations)
    3. Partner with faculty to introduce and facilitate IDSC 125 applied learning course
    4. Supervise student interns and collaborate with Marketing & Communications Fellow in outreach, marketing and promotion of experiential programs and opportunities
    5. Oversee program administration in regard to record keeping: tracking the activities, participation, and progress of individual student interns, supervisor assessment and collaboration with other offices in regard to intern compensation
    6. Partner with Associate Director for Career Coaching & Education to provide relevant professional development content for program participants
  2. Cultivate & manage relationships to expand student access to internships and other experiential learning through Whitman funded programs and outside resources
    1. Collaborate with the Alumni Relations Office to expand internships connected to alumni and their organizations
    2. Engage employers to create new internship opportunities & partner with Assistant Director of Employer Engagement to expand internship recruiting
  3. Expand student understanding of and access to experiential learning opportunities
    1. Implement and oversee a micro-internships platform, expanding student access to shorter-term experiential learning options
    2. Develop and oversee a cohort-based program to support first generation and Pell-eligible student pursuit of experiential learning opportunities
    3. Engage actively in CCEC initiatives to provide individual career coaching to every student at Whitman
    4. Provide excellent individual and small group advising for students in regard to internship opportunities and search processes
  4. Effectively communicate the scope and impact of experiential learning to the Whitman community by providing materials, data and presentations about internship programs to a variety of constituents and campus offices
  5. Utilize effective and current technologies and communication outlets in all facets of work
  6. Collect, analyze and evaluate data for continuous program improvement
  7. Complete other duties assigned as needed to support the goals of the Center


REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree in a related field
  • 1-2 years of experience managing complex programs
  • 1-2 years advising/coaching students
  • Previous internship or internship program experience
  • Understanding of and appreciation for liberal arts education
