Academic Advisor (71101)

Location: Brooklyn, NY

The department of Academic Advising is seeking an Academic Advisor who is self-directed and has the ability to effectively communicate with students and provide them with the necessary resources and skills to make good choices in their academic journey. We are committed to our mission statement of assisting students as they develop meaningful educational plans compatible with their life goals. Although the curriculum is well defined, there are opportunities, both within and beyond their required courses for students to participate in electives and activities that support their holistic self-development as well as their academic and personal growth. The Advisor will guide students in the decision-making process at each transition in their journey at Pratt.

On a typical day you will be required to:
  • Provide general student advising to all undergraduates to include: course selection and planning, exploring and identifying student academic and professional goals, academic progress evaluation, leaves of absence, study abroad, probation and academic dismissal adjudication, referrals to other administrative departments (i.e., Financial Aid, Bursar, Registrar, etc.), and dissemination of information regarding school policy and deadlines.
  • Generate new practices and programs to improve the advising experience and connect students with opportunities and resources, and create and pilot programs in tandem with other offices to enhance the student experience.
  • Manage targeted student outreach for retention in collaboration with faculty and the Learning Access Center (LAC) to provide student support and case management follow-up via Starfish retention software.

Education: BA is required, MA a plus, background and interest in the arts a must, knowledge of the Fashion and Digital Arts industry a plus.

Experience: 2 - 3 years of advising college students required.

Required Skills: Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and writing skills required. Proficiency with the Google Suite and the creation of spreadsheets a must. Knowledge of advising and registration platforms such as Ellucian Colleague preferred. Ability to self-manage and work independently as well as to collaborate in a team office setting. Must be well organized, detail-oriented, and patient with a desire and ability to work in an artistic environment with a diverse student body.

Memberships: Active membership in NACADA /NASPA is a plus.
