Position Summary

The Senior Associate Director of Development is an experienced and integral team member of the Office of Medical Annual Giving (OMAG), which manages annual giving appeals on behalf of Johns Hopkins Medicine. Reporting to the Director of Medical Annual Giving, the Sr. Associate Director oversees OMAG’s project team, including an Associate Director and an Assistant Director. This role is skilled in the utilization of a multichannel approach, and is responsible for the tracking and oversight of hundreds of email and direct mail projects, calling programs, and crowdfunding efforts. As primary liaison to the grateful patient fundraising programs at the main hospital campus, the Sr. Associate Director is charged with generating a significant portion of OMAG’s 750,000 + individual solicitations, which raise $3.5-$4 million annually from 15,000 donors.

Client Services (40%)

  • Serve as the primary liaison for East Baltimore-based clients (grateful patient development offices) on behalf of OMAG. Customize approach and communication style for each unique client to ensure best results.
  • Conduct regular, timely communications: head up twice-annual meetings with full DOFF teams, meet with each department liaison regularly, provide information and field questions via phone and email as necessary.
  • Keep clients accountable, ensuring that data and copy deadlines are met and mailings drop on schedule.

Vendor/Project Management (25%)

  • Select and supervise designers and production vendors, set and monitor schedules, negotiate costs, evaluate the use of photos and visual aids, and maintain quality standards.
  • Develop and monitor project-specific budgets and guide the work of project teams including staff and vendors

Strategy and Content Development (20%)

  • Collaborate with the Director and OMAG’s data team and partners to set and execute overall annual solicitation strategy
  • Follow institutional news and collaborate with OAS, Med Dev, and others as appropriate to target medicine groups for annual giving appeals.
  • Identify and refine major gift pipeline development strategies for all the departments served by OMAG.
  • Cultivate relationships with our peer and aspirant institutions to set trending and best practices within medical annual giving
  • Be a leader in setting industry standard and trends for annual giving including submitting proposals to well-known industry organizations for white papers and international and national conference presentations.

Administrative (15%)

  • Supervise Associate Director and Assistant Director
  • Conduct annual P3 and mid-year check-in reviews, gain an adequate understanding of responsibilities to be able to step in when employees are absent.
  • Assist with gift processing and related fulfillment during times of high volume,
  • Support professional growth, skills development and career development by using DAR and University resources and training.
  • Participate, lead and present in appropriate departmental and client-based meetings.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required. Five years professional experience required. Master’s Degree preferred
  • Excel knowledge and data and statistical analysis skills. Ability to make data-driven decisions.
  • Exceptional writing and editing skills, preferably with experience in persuasive and or medical specific writing; must have the ability to articulate and translate eloquently the complex goals, missions and aspirations of Johns Hopkins Medicine for all audiences.
  • A high level of organization and close attention to detail.
  • Must be able to work independently and as part of a team, manage projects, determine priorities, and maintain a high degree of professionalism and confidentiality.
  • Superlative collaborative and interpersonal skills; must be customer service oriented and behave diplomatically and appropriately with high-level colleagues and constituents.
  • Preference given to candidates with experience in hospital or academic medical environments and/or large university settings
  • Must be able to travel occasionally.
  • Must be able to lift 25 pounds.
