The Oncology Department is seeking a Senior Research Specialist who will be involved in the design and analysis of experiments using primary human samples as well as utilization of in vitro and in vivo models. The position will be responsible for successful implementation of next-generation sequencing, single-cell RNA sequencing and single cell multiomics to characterize the impact of somatic mutations on bone marrow and peripheral blood obtained from patients with clonal hematopoiesis. Will also be involved in in vitro and in vivo modeling to further define the impact of somatic mutations on hematopoiesis. This position will be presenting the results at weekly lab meetings and present the data at national and international meetings. The position will also be expected to publish data in peer-reviewed journals.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Performs and supervises laboratory experiments, particularly next-generation sequencing techniques, single-cell processing for various multiomics techniques.
  • Performs and supervises in vitro experiments using primary human bone marrow cells and cell lines, knockout and knockdown experiments using lentiviral delivery.
  • Works closely with institutional collaborators to provide technical and logistic support for clinical sample (blood, bone marrow, plasma) processing, analysis, data generation and maintenance of de-identified clinical information databases.
  • Performs flow cytometry on primary cells from patients and mice.
  • Reviews techniques and research protocols to ensure reproducibility and issues recommendations.
  • Works with laboratory staff to evaluate their technical knowledge and skills and assists in the training of other laboratory personnel.
  • Acts as a lead technical authority overseeing laboratory staff and is responsible for the overall daily operation of the laboratory including workload and personnel scheduling, quality control, inventory, and equipment maintenance.
  • Acts as the direct point of contact for industrial supplier sales personnel and technical support for both lab equipment and shared equipment which the lab uses extensively.
  • Supports research projects of students, fellows and other lab members as and when required.

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Biology, Biochemistry or related field. Master's Degree preferred.
  • 4 years of relevant laboratory experience.
  • Additional related experience may substitute for required education to the extent permitted by the JHU Equivalency Formula.*

* JHU Equivalency Formula: 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.  Additional related experience may substitute for the required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

Special Knowledge, Skills, or Abilities:

  • Excellent mammalian cell or cell line culture skills.
  • Experience in basic molecular biology techniques such as PCR, qPCR, DNA and RNA extraction.
  • Experience with various analytical methodologies including but not limited to flow cytometry, PCR, qPCR, cfDNA extraction, Western-blotting. If not conversant, expectation is for candidate to get acquainted with the technology and become independent within 6 months of joining.
  • Knowledge of human bone marrow cells isolation and processing.
  • Excellent record keeping, organizational, written and verbal skills.
  • Able to set up assays and conduct technical troubleshooting analysis.
  • Able to analyze data and provide a critical interpretation of results.
  • Ability to handle multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.

Starting Salary Range: $46,560-$64,100-$81,650 annually (commensurate with experience)
