The Assistant Director of Strategic Initiatives is part of the Fund for Johns Hopkins Medicine (FJHM), which is the medicine arm of the Johns Hopkins Development and Relations (DAR) department. FJHM raises approximately $325-350M annually for Johns Hopkins Medicine and closed its last comprehensive fundraising campaign in 2018 raising over $2.86B. DAR and FJHM are poised to launch their next comprehensive fundraising campaign and the Assistant Director will play a critical role in project management related to campaign planning, execution and performance, as well as annual performance.

The Assistant Director of Strategic Initiatives manages a portfolio of priority projects and leads project management for strategic initiatives of the Vice President of the Fund for Johns Hopkins Medicine (FJHM) and the Senior Management Team of FJHM.

The Assistant Director will be skilled in managing and prioritizing multiple projects simultaneously in a dynamic, fast-paced academic medical environment. This position reports directly to the Vice President for the Fund for Johns Hopkins Medicine.

The Assistant Director also facilitates key operational development activities for the Dean and CEO of Johns Hopkins Medicine in coordination with FJHM leadership.

Strategic Initiatives of the VP of FJHM: The Assistant Director works with the VP and manages the VP’s priority strategic initiatives for FJHM, along with the Dean and CEO’s priority initiatives for the School of Medicine (SOM); participates in all Senior Management and DOD meetings, and bi-monthly meetings with the Dean; is knowledgeable about JHU Development and Alumni Relations, FJHM, and SOM and their institutional priorities and programs, and well-informed on trends and news in the development profession and health care. 60% effort.

The Assistant Director is responsible for managing and coordinating a portfolio of priority projects for leadership at FJHM, including but not limited to:

Campaign Strategy, Planning & Execution: JHU is building infrastructure to enter into a new campaign over the next several years which will also include JHHS. The Assistant Director will support the VP and SMT members with respect to the planning and execution of the campaign strategy, which will include the coordination and management of projects to define, establish, activate and evaluate campaign feasibility, and organization of FJHM Development Offices around campaign planning and activation across FJHM and DAR. This position will also manage projects central to measuring and reporting campaign vitals as FJHM moves into a campaign with JHU.

Racial Equity and Inclusion: FJHM has embarked on a multifaceted plan to define, address and evaluate racial equity and inclusion across FJHM. This position will manage various teams working across FJHM on addressing projects relative to this work, and coordinate interactions across DAR efforts.

GPFR Cohort: Provide project management for annual cohort training of new MGOs in Grateful Patient Fundraising at FJHM (7 sessions with 15 FJHM faculty). Coordinates roster build out of cohort with DOD/VPs at FJHM, series scheduling, and evaluation

Development Initiatives: Facilitates implementation of development initiatives and programs. This includes the FJHM and DAR strategic plans, guidelines for ethical grateful patient fundraising and management of timely content for FundNet (internal resource for FJHM), including oversight of Grateful Patient Fundraising toolkits and maintenance of toolkits.

Research and Presentations: Conducts research and drafts presentations for the VP and Senior Management Team. Coordinates data collection, formatting and reporting for internal and external benchmarking requests.

Events and Committees: Attends and assists with events (e.g. Dean’s Symposia) and when appropriate, will be called upon to serve on committees for DAR/FJHM. Senior Management Projects: Oversee projects to execute the annual priorities of the team including employee engagement and culture building initiatives.

Liaison between FJHM and the Dean’s Office: Liaises between the Dean’s office and FJHM. Participates in monthly meetings with the Dean, his Chief of Staff, and the VP of FJHM. Ensures the VP is prepared for the meeting and is responsible for execution of meetings’ action items. Is knowledgeable about trends and news in the development profession and health care, and institutional priorities and programs. Reports current issues and milestones, as warranted. Helps track goals and processes for the Dean’s priority initiatives. Provides research and support for tasks and special projects. 20% effort.

Priority Initiatives as directed by the Dean/CEO of Johns Hopkins Medicine: Manages and facilitates priority initiatives as directed by the Dean/CEO of Johns Hopkins Health System that are the responsibility of the Fund for Johns Hopkins Medicine. 20% effort.

Trustee and VIP Engagement: Tracks engagement with trustees, gathers information and research as requested by Dean, and drafts correspondence to trustees and potential trustees. Manages Trustee membership codes in development information system. Provides weekly and monthly reports, including weekly update of the Dean’s travels to VP and AVP of FJHM, and manages medicine submissions to the JHU President’s Development Memo.

Research and Projects: Prepares briefings for the Dean and conducts research for the Dean’s staff, including Chief of Staff and Board Secretary. Manages reporting on Trustee giving. Provides input and support on projects including JHM Board of Trustees nominating committee process and proposals.

Requirements: Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree.
  • 5 years of progressively responsible, professional-level, administrative or project-based work
  • Additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

  • Medical philanthropy experience
  • Ability to exercise managerial and professional judgement and assume complete responsibility for decisions, consequences and results
  • Ability to use discretion with highly sensitive and confidential information
