Summary:
Reporting to the Director, Advising and Retention, the Community Resource Advisor is responsible for providing support to students experiencing material challenges that negatively impact their well-being and ability to achieve academic success. The position provides leadership, guidance, and support to students, connecting them to college and community resources, to assist in resolving educational and personal challenges that may impede their academic progress. The Community Resource Advisor will also provide support and outreach to faculty and staff regarding resources and support for students.
In providing these duties, the Community Resource Advisor is expected to be skilled with techniques for working with students from diverse backgrounds (including but not limited to gender, culture, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, disabilities, socioeconomic status, etc.) and communicating about potentially sensitive topics (including but not limited to food, housing, and financial insecurities).

Required Qualifications:
  • Master’s Degree in counseling, social work, human services, or related field or a Bachelor’s Degree in counseling, social work, human services, or related field with a minimum of three years of experience in higher education, secondary education, human services or a related field
  • Detailed understanding of eligibility requirements for benefit programs and campus wide and community resource support
  • Personal integrity, ability to form effective partnerships, ability to collaborate with others and work in a team environment
  • A high level of responsiveness to students, the campus community, and external partners
  • Excellent organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities with diligent attention to detail and accuracy
  • Ability to work independently, prioritizing workflow, solving problems and making decisions
  • Competence to work effectively and constructively with persons of diverse cultures, language groups, and abilities; Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusiveness


Desired Qualifications:
  • Experience providing case management services
  • Experience working with community college, under-prepared, and/or underrepresented students.
  • Bilingual (English and Spanish)

Work Schedule:
Monday - Friday, 8am-4:30pm; minimum of one 11am-7:30pm shift per week; occasional Saturday hours

Summary of Essential Functions:
Student and Customer Service (40%)
  • Connect students with the appropriate resources (internal and external), serving as a liaison to community resources
  • Assist students in determining eligibility for benefit programs (federal, state, or local programs that provide assistance or benefits to individuals on the basis of need) and identifying campus and community resource support
  • Serve as the designated college liaison for homeless students and students in care (students who were or are under the legal care of Department of Children and Family Services
  • Collaborate with Financial Aid to ensure students are evaluated for aid eligibility as independent students as appropriate and that they receive federal, state, and institutional aid as eligible
  • Manage inquiries and care reports of students of concern and advise staff and faculty on how to manage student issues
  • Communicate sensitive and confidential matters regarding student cases within the guidelines of Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)
  • Coordinate and provide culturally specific resources, including resources for non-English speakers to support students
  • Make appropriate and effective referrals for students experiencing emotional distress and personal issues to CLC’s Counseling and Psychological Services.


Outreach & Awareness (40%)
  • Provide outreach to students needing social services support
  • Design, develop, and deliver trainings and information campaigns to the campus community regarding identifying students needing resource support and/or experiencing homelessness and how to make referrals
  • Provide Cares Outreach and organization for Student of Concern cases
  • Serve as a point of contact for campus community members who are seeking consultation and advice about college services and resources for students
  • Represent the college as the liaison to United Way’s 2-1-1 committee
  • Participate in the statewide community college consortium to connect with colleagues at peer institutions and develop best practices for helping students apply for and receive assistance from benefit programs
  • Ensure CLC website and technology systems contain information about services available, both at CLC and in the external community
  • Develop and maintain connections with local community resource providers who could receive student referrals
Project and Process Management (15%)
  • Be familiar with public aid needs, including but not limited to assisting students in securing public aid/benefits for Medicaid, Medicare, Social Security, SNAP, Transportation, Housing, Unemployment, etc.
  • Manage, track, and maintain student records in appropriate college database system(s)
  • Track and monitor the momentum metrics, retention and graduation rates and complete annual Illinois Board of Higher Education and Illinois Community College Board enrollment, service and outcome reports for homeless students and students in care of Department of Children and Family Services as well as other students as needed
  • Keep abreast and understand the laws, legislation, policies, and procedures of the federal, state (including Illinois Public Act 102-0083 and Illinois House Bill 4201), and college that will affect the scope or practice of supporting students
  • Assess impact of services and continuously improve by reviewing student record data and provide summary reports to college leadership, including insight and recommendations based on trends and patterns
  • Research best practices and national trends in student resource support and identify areas of growth and learning opportunities
  • Collaborate with CLC’s Resource Development department and Foundation on grant and gift funding sources related to student resources
