Job Summary

Oversees student print and photography teams in the Student Media Center. Actively participates in regular budget and editors' meetings to plan student-centered editorial content. Assigns stories, photos and cartoons/graphics to respective student staff, sets deadlines and monitors progress. Edits content in preparation for publication. Uploads content to Student Media Center website at Editor-in-Chief's request. Serves as spokesperson for Student Media Center in Editor-in-Chief's absence.



Job Duties
Job duties include but are not limited to:
  • Plans, assigns and monitors staff's progress on assignments, maintains deadlines and edits print-based content.
  • Creates content as needed.
  • Collaborates with other editors to turn stories into viable scripts for video production.


Duties and responsibilities, as required by business necessity, may be added, deleted or changed at any time at the discretion of management, formally or informally, either verbally or in writing. Scheduling, shift assignments and work location may be changed at any time, as required by business necessity.



Required Qualifications
High school graduate or equivalent required
Must be enrolled in at least six (6) credit hours at JCCC each semester and maintain a 2.0 cumulative GPA
Must demonstrate writing/editing skills. Applicant may be given a writing test during interview
Microsoft Word skills


Preferred Qualifications
Successful completion of or concurrent enrollment in JOUR 120 Mass Media and Society, JOUR 122 News Writing and Reporting, JOUR 127 Introduction to Broadcasting, JOUR 145 Photojournalism, and/or JOUR 227 Basic Video Production (transcript required if not taken at JCCC)
Previous experience working with a student publication
Knowledge of Associated Press style
Previous supervisory experience
