JOB SUMMARY

The BIM/VDC (Building Information Modeling/Virtual Design & Construction) Technology Manager manages modeling, laser scanning and data management requirements for all internal and external stakeholders. Manages and periodically updates University BIM Guidelines and BIM Execution Plans (BEPs) that establish the protocols for how virtual design and construction shall be performed on campus.

Works to create a comprehensive model of the campus that reflects accurate as-built conditions of buildings and infrastructure. Manages capital project closeout deliverables to ensure accuracy and incorporates space changes into the portfolio of existing as-built models. The digital models managed by the BIM/VDC Technology Manager shall be used to support future capital project delivery and campus operations by providing easily assessable building/asset data that will help improve efficiency and reduce costs.

Manages the cloud storage environment (Autodesk) for model management and is responsible for administration of the environment which consists of account administration and technical support for end-users. Works with Planning and Capital Projects staff to develop skill sets so they may be proficient in utilizing authoring, review, and markup tools within applications for design and construction.

Create and maintain business processes used to capture model information during design, construction and at project completion and develop methods for maximizing the information for capital projects and operations staff. Develop and maintain a process for integrating model data on mobile devices to display building models and assets with associated images such as maintenance manuals for campus operations.

Provides technical assistance for staff on the procedures for capturing, reviewing, and sharing model data with various stakeholders. Works with the Technologies Solution group to identify model data to be captured in the Planning, Real Estate and Facilities (PREF) data warehouse so it may be integrated with other data sources that may support leadership decision making.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Ability to read and understand plans and specifications. Demonstrate extensive knowledge in required software (AutoCAD, Navisworks, Revit, etc.). Demonstrate effective written and verbal communication skills. Ability to use independent judgement, problem solving ability, self-starting and ability to prioritize based on relevant factors. Strong interest in learning new technologies. Knowledge and skills required for this position are normally acquired through a Bachelor's Degree in Architecture, Construction Management or related field plus at least 5-7 years' experience in AEC industry with a working knowledge of all aspects of professional services from planning and schematic design through project close-out, including design and technical expertise.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES & ACCOUNTABILITIES

1) Model Management
  • Oversees distribution of models and drawings for both read-only and editor access, working with PMs to determine best use.
  • Maintain campus wide as-built model as the basis for future design and construction.
  • Oversees reintegration of updated model conditions after construction, working with PMs to discuss changes.
  • Create and maintains a family/content library that contains useful and standard elements for modeling.
  • Regularly assesses model health and addresses issues.
  • Develops templates for PMs to utilize.
  • Evaluate and implement new technology that will allow the University to maximize efficiency in the delivery of capital projects and management of the campus.


2) Technical Support
  • Oversees staff training of industry leading tool sets (Autodesk), including tutorials, process documents, and presentations.
  • Assists staff with troubleshooting and resolving program issues and questions.


3) Internal Coordination
  • Works with project managers to assist on start-up and close-out of projects, and to assess ongoing processes & effectiveness.
  • Works with Commissioning and Capital Projects staff to verify incoming turnover packages.
  • Works with Archibus team to integrate new as-builts records into existing environment.


4) External Coordination
  • Works with engineers, architects, and construction managers to facilitate turnover packages.
  • Performs quality assurance checks on external models to ensure they are complying with NU standards.
  • Review BIM Execution Plans to ensure they align with University standards and objectives.


5) Maintaining Policies and Procedures
  • Develop and maintain standards & best practices for the department, and regularly seeks to keep these up to date.
