Job Summary

The Office of Information Technology (OIT) encourages applications for a Research Computing Cloud Analyst! This position serves as user support for the Research Computing (RC) cloud services. The RC group provides these services to campus researchers and in some cases to the University of Colorado and Rocky Mountain Advanced Computing Consortium (RMACC) community. Responsibilities of this position include providing trainings, connecting users with vendor training, other researchers and security experts, improving and maintaining user documentation, answering tickets at our help desk, and providing support to users through one-on-one consultations. Informed through consultations with users, this position will be expected to broker deeper consultations with available cloud provider contacts, lead and manage training workshops and seminars, as well as inform on new services needed by these users.

Research Computing, formed in 2010, with a growing regional and national presence, is an exciting and fast-paced innovator and campus leader as well as a provider of comprehensive CI, supporting the CU Boulder campus research computing and data needs.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

User Support & Consulting:
  • Collaborate with researchers at the University of Colorado on efficient and cloud-appropriate approaches to data workflows for advancing investigations in languages they use and understand.
  • Use consultations to determine the best cloud solution for researcher needs, including providing direct consulting, connecting researchers with vendor experts, and identifying techniques to improve research workflows.
  • Field user requests, inquiries and issues pertaining to usage of and access to the cloud services using the RC help desk ticketing system. Common topics will include onboarding, account initialization, access management, explaining available services and networking options, and educating researchers on the required security protocols.
  • Resolve user requests and service incidents in a timely manner, supporting the team to arrive at root cause and documenting results and lessons learned.
  • Follow required compliance policies procedures as needed to support the environment and maintain documentation.

Coordination / Collaboration
  • Collaborate with team members including those in Research Computing, Cloud Engineering, Networking, Security and other services in OIT as needed to resolve user requests.
  • Work with researchers and collaborators to optimize interoperability and long-term sustainability of data related workflows and datasets as generalized resources for researchers
  • Coordinate seminars and trainings with vendors.
  • Assist other cloud staff with activities in the group, including billing issues and other inquiries as needed.

Training & Documentation
  • Prepare and implement training opportunities for researchers and students on topics not covered by cloud vendors.
  • Participate in outreach activities such as office hours, town halls, and conducting presentations to educate research teams on available services.
  • Create and maintain training and procedural documentation for using and supporting the environment and to meet required compliance requirements.
  • Conduct regular reviews of processes and documentation to meet compliance requirements.

Professional Development
  • Learn new concepts and technology and earn certifications as needed to support users and excel in job duties.

  • Salary range: $75,000 - $85,000.

What We Require
  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution in a scientific or engineering field, including computer science.
    • A combination of education and relevant experience may be substituted for the degree on a year for year basis.
  • One year of working in a role supporting researchers or providing training in an academic environment.
  • Experience in assisting users with data issues.

  • Strong collaborative skills and ability to work with colleagues to solve sophisticated problems.
  • Strong customer service and relationship skills.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills and the ability to work respectfully with users and partners with a variety of computing skill levels.
  • Ability to plan and coordinate outreach services for the user community.

  • Ability to learn new concepts and technology and support users in using it for their research.
What We Would Like You To Have
  • Experience in research computing support.
  • Experience in supporting systems with a high level of security controls.
  • Knowledge of AWS or Azure and fundamental cloud concepts.
  • Experience with Agile methodologies.
