About the Department/Unit
The School of Public Affairs (SPA) at American University has been
a hub for policy-related research and teaching for 85 years.
Created during the depths of the Great Depression to train federal
employees to implement President Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s “New
Deal,” SPA builds a culture of excellence and transforms the
student experience through personalized teaching and experiential
education; empowerment to conduct and produce research for those
who seek knowledge; and ongoing engagement and collaboration
between the academic and policy-planning spheres.
The Graphic Design Coordinator delivers graphic design services and
creative services that help in the promotion and marketing of the
School of Public Affairs. Under the direction of the Director of
Strategic Communications & PR, this position will create design
elements for use in internal and external marketing campaigns,
academic and fundraising initiatives, events, and programs of the
School of Public Affairs (SPA) at American University. The scope of
the work entails concept development and design of digital, website
and print collateral to support SPA goals and objectives. The
position works collaboratively with members of SPA’s communications
staff including the director, assistant director of marketing &
communications, digital media manager and web manager, to produce a
wide range of collateral to support SPA’s and American University’s
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
- Design Coordination:Design and produce creative
solutions and final art for a variety of print materials. Materials
include brochures, postcards, posters and other program mailers for
SPA academic programs, events and campaign/fundraising efforts.
Work closely with Director and Assistant Director for creative
direction and concept assessment and critique. This entails
participation in weekly team meetings, planning and research,
brainstorming and preparing design ideas for presentations. Create
new ideas for SPA graphic design rooted in best practices. With
communications colleagues, contribute to the creation and
production of department multimedia projects. Archive completed
- Communications Outreach Services and Events Support:Work
with Web Manager to compile content and create digital materials
for the website, social media and email communications. Assist with
labels, training/program materials and announcements for events as
needed. Participate in professional development opportunities.
Monitor use of new technology, tools, and creative talent that
extend our internal staff capacity.
- Other Duties As Needed:Other duties and administrative
tasks as assigned by the Director and/or Assistant Director of
Communications which may include managing student workers,
scheduling rooms, and organizing internal meetings.
Required Education and Experience
- Full Time, 35 hours/week.

Preferred Education and Experience
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent in visual communication/graphic
design or related field.
- 1-3 years of relevant experience.
Additional Eligibility Qualifications
- 2-4 years of relevant experience.
- Experience in a University environment preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to design and produce projects from start
to finish. Demonstrated experience implementing identity and brand
guidelines, campaigns, print production, design for web, and
working within tight deadlines. Must have strong communication
skills, be detail oriented, and manage time efficiently. Must have
a solid working knowledge of production, MacOS, and experience with
Adobe CC (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Acrobat, and MS
- Actively engagement in expanding skills, and awareness of
industry trends and emerging technologies.
