The Administrative Specialist will primarily support the Department Chair of Communication and Rhetorical Studies and provide specialized support to the Communication and Rhetorical Studies program. This position serves as a primary point of contact for students, parents, prospective students, alumni and other units on campus, and is able effectively and accurately to deliver information about processes and resources to these groups. The Administrative Specialist oversees all event planning, office staff training/management, office supply management and internal/external department communication. This person is responsible for making arrangements for all department-sponsored student trips and off-campus department events. Qualifications

A person in this position should be personable, organized, and emotionally intelligent, with good written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills, and one who anticipates longer deadlines and can adapt to unexpected circumstances. A person in this position is a problem-solver. A person in this position should also possess understanding of computers, social media platforms, and accessibility standards. Responsibilities
  • Provide executive-level administrative leadership and professional support to the chairperson of the Department of Communication and Rhetorical Studies. Manage the day-to-day operations of the CRS office including administrative leadership in project management as well as maintaining confidentiality with sensitive issues affecting the department. Primary point of contact for faculty, students, parents, prospective students, alumni, and others across the University and is able effectively and accurately to deliver information about processes and resources to these groups. Position generates content for and maintains the departmental webpages and social media, and assists in the creation and circulation of official internal and external communication from the department.
  • Primary event planner, handling event management for all faculty, student, admissions/recruitment, and alumni gatherings, as well as all arrangements and recruitment for CRS Engaging Careers and D.C. Inside the Beltway programs.
  • Train, supervise, and mentor office staff, and submit related payroll. Serve as building liaison, or supervise other designees, for security, access, and construction projects. Handle the chairperson’s travel arrangements.
  • Procure and oversee departmental supplies, including obtaining purchasing quotes, preparing requisitions, and other related activities, including usage of an SU Pro-Card for purchases, reservations, etc. Responsible for monthly reconciliations of ALL department Pro-Cards.
  • Oversee care of CRS classrooms, responsible for technology usage and maintenance and any related training for faculty and staff.
