Job Description:

The Department of Music at the College of the Holy Cross seeks a part-time in-person staff
member to organize and coach its chamber music program in consultation with the Chair and
other members of the music department. As the interim Chamber Music Instructor and
Coordinator, this individual will place interested student instrumentalists and vocalists into small
groups based on ability level, work with the instrumental and vocal lesson instructors to assist in
the selection of appropriate repertoire, lead and coach group rehearsals during the weekly
Chamber Music meeting time, coordinate student-led rehearsals occurring outside of the
regularly scheduled meeting time for Chamber Music, facilitate the end-of-semester Chamber
Music recital, and collaborate with the Department of Music Chair and other members of the
music department on special events (e.g., prospective student "open houses"). In addition to the
music department Chair (to whom the coordinator reports) and other members of the music
department (with whom the coordinator will collaborate), the successful candidate will also work
closely with the Music Office Coordinator, the Music Management Fellow, and the Prior
Performing Arts Center Director of Production.

This is an in-person position at 15 hours a week for 9 months. The position begins on August 26th, 2022, and ends on May 26, 2023.

Major Areas of Responsibility

The major areas of responsibility for the Interim Chamber Music Instructor and Coordinator will include:
  • Initial Recruiting for Chamber Music in collaboration with music faculty, ensemble directors, and music lesson instructors
  • Holding auditions for all interested students
  • Initial selection of student groups and repertoire in consultation with all interested parties
  • Coaching rehearsals (once a week) and all performances of the Chamber Music program
  • Planning the chamber music season (one dedicated concert per semester), and additional appearances for student groups in select venues where possible throughout the year, working in coordination with the Department Chair; outreach in the community is especially welcome
  • Attending relevant performance events to support students
  • Occasional coaching (outside of the normal rehearsal time for Chamber Music for students participating in the ensemble (1-2 hours per week)
  • Coordinating student-led rehearsals occurring outside of the regularly scheduled rehearsal time
  • Preparing professional quality publicity materials and concert programs for the Chamber Music concerts or related special events
  • Working with the Music Office Coordinator and the Director of Production (Prior Center for the Performing Arts) to reserve rehearsal space for events outside of the regularly scheduled rehearsal time for Chamber Music
  • Working with the Department of Music to coordinate activities of the chamber music program
  • Assisting the music department, as appropriate, with the review of supplemental application materials for prospective students



Requirements:

Required Qualifications
  • Master's degree or higher in Music Performance.
  • Experience coaching chamber music to college-age students
  • Relevant professional performance experience
  • Evidence of being able to support an inspiring and productive teaching environment
  • Willingness and ability to accommodate students' individual learning styles
  • Commitment to diversity and inclusion in repertory, for example, music composed by women,historically and geographically underrepresented identity groups, and unfamiliar musics (old and new)
  • Organizational and communication skills

Preferred Qualifications
  • Evidence of an active performance schedule
  • Interest and/or experience in teaching chamber music in a liberal arts context
