Job Summary:

The University of Wisconsin-Madison seeks a director for its Writing Across the Curriculum and Writing Fellows Program. This is a full-time, twelve-month permanent academic staff position at the level of teaching professor.

The Director of WAC and Writing Fellows will develop, sustain, and expand WAC initiatives across campus and build strong campus partnerships for WAC including with CTLM, the Teaching Academy, the DELTA program, the Vice Provost for Teaching and Learning, the Associate Dean of Academic Planning/Director of General Education, the Associate Dean for Teaching and Learning in L&S, the teaching innovation leader in the School of Business, Student Learning Assessment, and more. The director will serve on the campus General Education committee, will oversee the training of teaching assistants in Communications-B courses, and will develop and present a 4-week module on teaching writing for two MTLE cohorts each semester. In addition, the WAC/WF director will be an active member of the campus High Impact Practices (HIPs) Collaborative. The director will also oversee the publication of the 300-page WAC Sourcebook and twice-yearly WAC Newsletter. As the director of Writing Fellows, this position includes teaching one 3-credit honors seminar each fall (as well as mentoring an experienced TA teaching a second section of the course); overseeing a 1-credit writing workshop each spring, recruiting and selecting 25-30 new Writing Fellows each year; administering the Writing Fellows program (50 Writing Fellows); recruiting and orienting faculty to work with Fellows; mentoring 4 graduate TA assistant directors of WAC and Writing Fellows. The director will oversee and manage all websites and social media (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter) accounts for both programs. In addition, the director will oversee the budget for both programs and work with the CRTW director to attract gifts for the programs.

The director will also regularly attend national and international conferences on writing studies, consult with colleagues at other universities, give lectures, conduct research, maintain UW-Madison's Writing Center/WAC reputation as a prominent leader among Big 10 schools and across the country.

The WAC/WF director will also work closely with the Writing Center director, will supervise Writing Center academic staff, and will take part in Writing Center/WAC working groups.

Responsibilities:

Provides classroom, online, and/or laboratory instruction associated with more than one lecture or laboratory course. Assists with the design and execution of administrative functions associated with academic instruction and the development of pedagogy/andragogy or assessment tools and resources to support quality student learning. Provides for-credit instruction in formats such as classroom, online and/or laboratory settings, including grading. Serves as an instructor of record.
  • 10% Designs curriculum and/or techniques for instruction in a disciplinary area and suggests new ways of effective instruction in courses within discipline
  • 5% Assesses learner performance and prepares reports recommending instructional improvements
  • 5% Develops teaching techniques that enhance course effectiveness in alignment with desired outcomes and established strategy and trains faculty and other instructional staff in use of instructional techniques and programs. Presents evaluations of teaching methods and techniques to those in the institution and elsewhere
  • 35% Provides classroom, online, and/or laboratory instruction, including grading
  • 5% Supervises the day-to-day activities of work unit employees involved in instructional support as needed
  • 5% Develops grant proposals for instructional development and may serve as principal or co-principal investigator on grants to develop new teaching methods in the discipline. May administer budget and personnel for instructional grants and programs
  • 10% Assists in defining the objectives of the program and plays a major role in carrying out program duties
  • 5% Oversees curriculum design and instruction of other instructors
  • 5% Provides oversight and guidance on the development of grant proposals by other staff
  • 5% Leads unit level course programming and alignment with unit policy, procedures, guidelines, and instructional focus
  • 5% Advises unit director on instructional budget and personnel decisions
  • 5% Provides professional development around curriculum development and program implementation to support other instructors in the unit

Education:

Required
PhD in English or Writing Studies

Qualifications:

--10 years of experience in writing program administration
--Experience training instructional staff and teaching assistants in writing across disciplines
--Experience training undergraduate writing fellows for placement in writing courses across disciplines
--Experience supervising staff
--Demonstrated ongoing involvement in professional development and engagement in research in writing studies and writing program administration
