Job Summary:

The Payroll Specialist I leads payroll and benefit processing and consultation for all La Follette School employees. The position consults with the Administrator and collaborates with the School's Funds Manager on faculty grant fund balances in support of faculty salary support and other complex payroll and funding issues. The position also leads department HR efforts related to student hiring, including drafting appointment letters, setting up health benefits, and coordinating onboarding.

Responsibilities:

Processes payroll, receives employee payroll changes, and provides routine human resources information to one or more work units in order to ensure timely and accurate payroll transaction processing. Maintains personnel records and assists with work unit operational policy development.
  • 20% Prepares, organizes, disseminates, and processes payroll resources, communications, and materials for one or more work units through various mediums under general supervision
  • 20% Prepares and audits standard work unit payrolls, and completes payroll transactions and changes adhering to established policies and procedures to meet anticipates deadlines
  • 20% Receives, responds to, and resolves employee payroll questions and problems
  • 10% Counsels new, existing, and terminating employees on payroll options, timelines, taxes, and deductions
  • 5% Represents unit/program at institutional payroll workshops, informational meetings, and training sessions
  • 5% Contributes to the development, implementation, interpretation, and revision of work unit Human Resources policies and procedures according to institutional and legal rules and regulations
  • 10% Leads department human resource efforts related to student employee hiring, including drafting appointment letters, setting up health benefits, and coordinating onboarding
  • 10% Consults with Administrator and collaborates with Funds Manager on faculty grant fund balances in support of faculty salary support and other complex payroll and funding issues

Qualifications:

Required Skills:
- Professional experience working in human resources functions such as payroll, compensation, and benefits
- Ability to interpret policies and procedures related to payroll and benefits
- High attention to detail
- Ability to multi-task and work quickly and accurately within strict time deadlines
- Computer literacy with experience with a wide range of computer software, specifically Microsoft Excel

Preferred Skills:
- Proficiency using web-based financial software to monitor funding records
- Knowledge of higher education payroll and benefit policies, processes, and programs
- Knowledge of process improvement techniques
- Excellent problem-solving skills, including ability to correct issues when they arise
