The Faculty of Arts at the University of British Columbia – Vancouver invites applications from highly qualified candidates for the role of Director of the School of Social Work. This is a professorial stream, tenure-track appointment normally at the rank of Full Professor. The appointment will commence on July 1, 2023, or a mutually agreeable start date. The successful candidate will be appointed in the Director’s role on a five-year term with the possibility of renewal for another term, after which time they will become a part of the school’s faculty complement. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. All UBC positions are subject to budgetary approval. 
 
Building upon a foundation of social justice and an ethic of care, the UBC School of Social Work is a community of learners actively engaged in the development of critical, transformative knowledge for social work practice.  Based on a commitment to fundamental social work values and a vision of social justice, UBC’s School of Social Work prepares social work students for generalist (BSW) and advanced (MSW) professional practice and advanced research (PHD). We promote the scholarly generation of critical transformative knowledge through research and study relevant to social work theories, individual and community-based practices, social development and social administration.

Reporting to the Dean of the Faculty of Arts, The Director plays a vital role in the leadership, administration and collegial governance of the School, fostering a culture where education, scholarship and service can flourish. The Director advocates, promotes and articulates the School’s interests in all aspects of university affairs and maintains a significant leadership role within the School, the University and the wider community – both local and international.

 

We expect that the successful candidate will have a strong record of research publications and scholarship activity, excellence in teaching at the graduate and undergraduate levels, graduate supervision, and academic leadership that is commensurable with the values of the School. They will also hold a PhD in Social Work or a related field and either a master’s or a bachelor’s degree in Social Work or equivalent. 

 

Key accountabilities include: 

 

  • Providing administrative leadership for the School, including human resources, operational oversight, mentoring, financial management and academic/accreditation program reviews; 
  • Fostering and supporting a culture of research and scholarship excellence and pedagogy that fits with the values of the School; 
  • Modelling the principles of social justice, an ethics of care, and commitment to decolonization, that is reflective of the School’s vision to creating critically reflexive and inclusive learning and collegial environment. 
  • Supporting collaborative and collegial practices and decision-making that include open and transparent communication;

  1. a letter of application a curriculum vitae teaching philosophy/practice, including evidence of teaching effectiveness two writing samples; and statements (no longer than 1 page each) summarizing research program experience in and approach to administrative and leadership roles vision for a School of Social Work in a research-intensive University; and experience working with a diverse student body and contributions or potential contributions to creating/advancing a culture of equity and inclusion at UBC and beyond.
