We are seeking a skilled and experienced major gift fundraiser to join our team in achieving our major gift and planned giving program objectives. Reporting to the Associate Dean for External Relations, the Senior Associate Director of Development is an integral member of the School’s Office of External Relations team (Development, Alumni Relations, Marketing and Communications) and will work closely with Development & Alumni Relations colleagues and faculty leaders to identify and cultivate relationships with prospective major and planned giving donors at the $100,000-$2,500,000 level. The Senior Associate Director of Development will play a lead role in helping to shape the priorities and operations of The Peabody Institute as we raise funds for faculty support and student scholarships, and embark on a major capital expansion project, expand diversity, equity and inclusion programming, and invest in technology and innovation.

The Senior Associate Director of Development will work closely with the Dean and the Associate Dean in managing some relationships with members of the Peabody Institute’s Advisory Board. The Senior Associate Director of Development will develop close working relationships with colleagues within The Peabody Institute’s External Relations team and in Johns Hopkins University’s central fundraising departments, including the offices of Research, Prospect Management, Principal Gifts, Gift Planning, Regional Programs, International Programs, and Foundation Relations.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Develop a comprehensive understanding of the research, teaching and performance programs and priorities of The Peabody Institute, and the Development & Alumni Relations procedures of Johns Hopkins University.
  • Identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward a major gift prospect pool of alumni, friends and other supporters for major and planned gifts. Maintain and actively manage a portfolio of about 75 prospects with the capacity to make major gifts.
  • Working closely with faculty, External Relations and other colleagues, plan and execute solicitation strategies leading to major gifts; maintain regular contact with supporters in pursuing these strategies and build enduring relationships, completing 125-150 virtual and in-person visits per year.
  • Prepare case statements, proposals, solicitation letters, gift agreements and other development materials for prospects and donors that articulate The Peabody Institute’s needs, values, and ambitions. Communicate with major prospects and donors about specific ways to give, both current and deferred, to maximize gift and tax benefits.
  • Develop annual fundraising goals and objectives in consultation with the Associate Dean for External Relations; create a development plan each year to research and identify new prospects, make discovery calls, and build a prospect pool based on new prospects and past donors and current funding priorities.
  • Serve as liaison with selected academic departments, centers and programs. Work with the chair or director to determine fundraising opportunities for the department, center, or program. Develop excellent relations with faculty leaders and department chairs in support of Peabody’s priorities. Develop agendas, talking points and briefings for meetings, as needed, and ensure ongoing effective communication between faculty and their donors, identifying topics for broader dissemination via Peabody and University publications as appropriate.
  • Dependent on experience, management of a gift officer, and possibly others, providing direct supervision, performance management, training, and guidance.
  • Build a strong network of collegial partnerships with development and departmental representatives in areas across campus, both within the Peabody Institute and Johns Hopkins University more broadly.
  • Partner with the Peabody Institute’s Constituent Engagement team to ensure timely preparation of stewardship reports for donors. Ensure opportunities for event attendance by donors, as well as recruit and support key volunteers who could assist in Peabody’s advancement efforts (e.g. mentoring, panel presentation, lectures, etc). Attend events when needed.
  • Lead and assist with the planning and coordination of major development events including Advisory Board meetings, virtual seminars, professorship dedications and donor recognition events, as needed.
  • Additional responsibilities as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Five years’ related professional experience, with a track record of securing five or six figure gifts, preferably in an academic and/or arts setting.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Must possess effective interpersonal skills and ability to develop solid relationships with prospects, donors, faculty and colleagues.
  • Excellent writing and presentation skills.
  • Supervisory or significant project management experience preferred.
  • High levels of diplomacy and tact required.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage several projects simultaneously, understand the need to re-evaluate priorities on a regular basis, and flourish in a fast-paced atmosphere.
  • A team mentality with a willingness to participate and collaborate for the greater good is necessary.
  • Some planned giving experience preferred.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to maintain a high degree of professionalism and confidentiality.
  • Ability and willingness to travel frequently throughout the United States, as needed. Must possess valid driver’s license.
  • Strong computer literacy skills required (Microsoft Office: Word, Excel, Powerpoint) and the ability to learn new software (e.g. prospect management database).
