Job Summary

Drexel University's Department of Civil, Architectural, and Environmental Engineering invites applications for a Research Scientist to assist in research, field monitoring, data analysis, and numerical modeling related to condition assessment of civil infrastructures.

Essential Functions
  • With many governmental and non-governmental partners, Dr. Bartoli research laboratory at Drexel University evaluates the conditions of the built environment in urban communities. The lab’s current focus is the condition assessment of existing structural and infrastructure systems such as bridges as well as underground utilities. The research is applied, interdisciplinary, and participatory. We primarily work with infrastructure stakeholders, and government agencies in the Northeast US as well as in the West. The lab is situated in the Department of Civil, Architectural, and Environmental Engineering and is supervised by Dr. Ivan Bartoli.
  • The Research Scientist will become integrated in all facets of the lab activities. Desired skills include numerical modelling with extensive knowledge of software packages such as COMSOL, MATLAB, Abaqus, AutoCAD, Strand 7 and AutoCAD; ability to independently perform complex field testing on bridges as well as on other infrastructures by using wired and wireless sensing monitoring, for example using displacement, acceleration, strain, tilt and additional sensors and sensing systems, and various data logging and transmission systems; the ability to manipulate, visualize, analyze big data sets using tools such as MATLAB and extensive AutoCAD experience.
  • Due to the collaborative nature of our work, the ideal candidate would also have excellent written and spoken communication skills, feel comfortable with public speaking, and engaging a wide range of academic and non-academic partners. The position also involves some basic administrative responsibilities to keep projects on schedule, within budget, and deliverables focused. The Research Scientist will assist in developing budgets, writing proposals, overseeing student researchers, creating various academic products including papers and presentations, and otherwise assisting in the lab and other duties as required.
Required Qualifications
  • PhD in Civil Engineering or related field
  • At least five years of postdoc research experience
  • Valid Driver's license will be required within 3 months of the start date and willingness to travel to locations in the U.S. as required
Preferred Qualifications
  • Extensive experience working in a university or laboratory research setting
  • Some experience managing multidisciplinary teams
  • Interest in laboratory as well as extensive field testing and numerical modelling of complex civil engineering systems
  • Excellent organizational, writing, and oral communication skills. Proven ability to be self-directed and independently manage time, budgets, and expectations
  • Experience with a wide range of sensors, including sensors from Geokon, PCB, and data acquisition systems such as Campbell Scientific, National Instruments, and similar vendors
  • Advanced computer programming skills in languages such as Matlab
  • Comfortable managing big data sets
  • Willing and able to work outside, even in adverse weather conditions
  • Willingness to work in Philadelphia, and other locations across the US
