Essential Functions (Job Duties)
Position title: Academic Advisor I/II/III
The Center for Latino/a and Latin American Studies (CLLAS) at Wayne State University invites applications for an Academic Advisor. Job duties include coordinating and participating in CLLAS educational programs that are designed to develop and enhance student academic success and retention.

Essential Functions:
Serve as an academic advisor to a mostly first-generation Latina/o/x student population.

Serve as the primary advisor and contact for the academic minor in Latino/a and Latin American Studies (LAS).

Track and report on CLLAS student retention, persistence and graduation data.

Work with CLLAS/WSU faculty and staff to research and implement strategies to enhance college graduation rates of underrepresented students.

Work with CLLAS faculty, staff, peer mentors and community/corporate partners to facilitate student participation in service learning capstone requirements for LAS minor.

Facilitate academic success seminars and study-skills workshops for CLLAS students (ex. LAS 1410, FYS 1010).

Lead a committee of students, staff and faculty to plan and host annual Latino/a and Latin American Studies research conference.

Manage the planning, execution and sustainability of the CLLAS College to Career (C2C) Learning Community Program, regularly assessing and analyzing the program's needs.

Coordinate efforts to recruit and facilitate continued student participation in C2C and other CLLAS programs.

Through the C2C Program, provide support around academic, career development and/or graduate school goals for CLLAS students.

Coordinate or connect with existing on or off-campus opportunities for C2C participants (ex. workshops, speakers, mentor/mentee events, conferences, etc.).

Serve as liaison between the C2C Program and CLLAS/WSU faculty, staff and students, as well as external community/corporate partners.

Regularly track, assess and report on C2C Program's progress to CLLAS administrators, WSU Learning Communities Office, funders and other key stakeholders.

Recruit, screen and train CLLAS peer and professional mentors, matching mentors with student participants.

Manage C2C Program budget, seeking and cultivating sources of funding (such as grants) to support program costs.

Maintain strong community relations with CLLAS alumni and community partners, keeping a detailed alumni and mentor database.

Assist in the planning and hosting of other CLLAS events as needed (ex. graduation celebration, anniversary dinner, summer program, etc.).

Unique Duties

Qualifications
Bachelor's degree required for Academic Advisor I. Masters Degree required for Academic Advisor II and III. Experience advising and/or mentoring students within a higher education setting.

Preferred Qualifications
Experience serving (or familiarity with) the needs of first-generation and/or Latina/o/x students. Bilingual (Spanish/English) skills.
