Position Summary: Come join the Cal Poly Humboldt Transformation!

Cal Poly Humboldt invites applicants for the position of Research Architect, which will be primarily responsible for the implementation and operation of a new Science Network for the campus. A high-speed, low-latency network, this will connect multiple campus research facilities with other California State universities, the Pacific Research Platform, and international partner campuses. Part of maintaining that network will include building and operating high-capacity storage solutions and secure gateways which allow access to research data from the commodity network. This position will also assist faculty in finding and navigating research computing solutions, both local and cloud based.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Coordinate the Cal Poly Humboldt Science Network, including switches, routers, and purpose-built storage devices
  • Work with Information Technology Services staff and campus faculty to identify and support a variety of research use cases
  • Support wireless connectivity for research locations, both on and off campus
  • Analyze traffic patterns, provide reporting of usage, capacity and load
  • Support connectivity to the university's ocean research vessel


Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:

To enter this classification, a basic foundation of knowledge and skills in technical, information network systems is a prerequisite. This foundation would normally be obtained through a bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering, industrial technology, telecommunications or a related technical field, or equivalent training and experience. Foundation knowledge and skills for the Network Analyst include a basic knowledge of telecommunications and transmission technologies, including network architecture, topologies, protocols, programming applications and interfaces appropriate to the defined work area and assignments. Based on specialized assignments, a position may also require background, and/or licensure if required, in computer operating systems, broadcast network functions, or telecommunication switching systems.

Additional relevant experience can be substituted for equivalent education on a year for year basis.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Associate with this Position Include:
  • Ability to problem solve, work effectively under time pressure and formulate flexible approaches to problem resolution
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with team members, vendors, and customers
  • Strong enterprise troubleshooting skills involving systems, networks, and heterogenous client endpoints
  • Demonstrated documentation skills that include process, configuration, topology diagrams, and project planning
  • Demonstrated cultural humility, sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of students, faculty, and staff

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Equivalent to Bachelor's degree AND two (2) years full time professional experience providing support in an enterprise environment is preferred.
  • Higher Education Experience
  • Experience supporting Research Computing
  • Experience with CBRS or private LTE networks
  • Alcatel, Aruba, and/or Palo Alto Networks experience
