DESCRIPTION: Cal Poly Humboldt and the Department of Anthropology invites applications for a full-time, temporary Visiting Faculty appointment for academic year 2022/2023. This position is a full-time one (1) year appointment per the Collective Bargaining Agreement (Article 12.32). Initial appointment will be for the Fall 2022 semester. Subsequent reappointment for Spring 2023 is expected, but will be contingent upon satisfactory performance evaluation. For appointment in future terms, the faculty member must apply to the Temporary Faculty Pool and/or apply to other faculty vacancies at Cal Poly Humboldt, as they are available. The successful candidate is expected to teach courses in lower and upper division classes in Anthropology and Archaeology. Duties will include management of an archaeology teaching lab, and up to 40% of the position will consist of duties assigned in a Cultural Resource Facility to assist CRF co-directors managing archaeological and historical projects.

PROFESSIONAL DUTIES: Candidates should be committed to teaching excellence. The primary professional responsibilities of instructional faculty members in temporary positions are teaching, maintaining office hours and working collaboratively and productively with colleagues. Instructional assignments may include: Archaeology & World Prehistory, World Heritage & Archaeology, Special Topics in Archaeology, Archaeology of North America, Method and Theory in Archaeology, Cultural Resource Management and Field Archeology and Anthropology Internship. The candidate will work closely with CRF's Directors, research associates, and staff to promote CRF's business interests and in adherence to its mission, vision and values.

Instructional assignments will be consistent with the programmatic needs of the department and students.

Cal Poly Humboldt sits on the traditional homelands of the Wiyot people in what is currently called Arcata, CA. The Wiyot people call the area Goudi'ni (over in the woods). The Cal Poly Humboldt campus in Northern California is in close proximity to several thriving Native American tribes and communities. Cal Poly Humboldt currently has the largest percentage of Native American students in the CSU system and has over 30 Native American faculty and staff, many from local area California Indian tribes. Humboldt is home to a number of leading Native American programs including the Indian Tribal Education and Personnel Program (ITEPP) and the Indian Natural Resource, Science and Engineering Program (INRSEP). Qualifications
PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS: An earned Master’s degree or equivalent in Anthropology or Archaeology from an accredited college or university is required at the time of appointment. Applicants must demonstrate teaching effectiveness and professional experience with cultural resource consulting and project implementation. Candidates with experience developing curriculum/courses/programs that inclusively serve a diverse student population and facilitate community growth are especially encouraged to apply.

The successful candidate must demonstrate the following:
  • Expertise in several of the core areas of Archaeology;
  • Commitment to and/or experience promoting and fostering a learning environment that is supportive of individuals from diverse backgrounds;
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with diverse students and colleagues;
  • An understanding of the dynamics of diversity in higher education and a demonstrated ability to incorporate this understanding, as appropriate, in one’s teaching, scholarship, and service;
  • Potential for effective teaching using a variety of methodologies and inclusive pedagogy strategies;
  • Expertise in cultural resource management to include overseeing technical aspects of archaeological and historical field research, data collection, inventory, and analysis as well as final report production;
  • Commitment to training and mentoring cultural resources staff and students;
  • Ability to maintain good working relationships with state and federal agency contacts and clients;
  • Professional experience with CRM in California; and
  • Experience with NEPA, CEQA, Section 106, and CA Revised Statutes.

Preferred qualifications for this position include:
  • Ph.D. in Anthropology, Archaeology or related field;
  • ABD candidates may be considered depending on the expected completion date;
  • Educational emphasis in the archaeology of California and/or the Pacific Northwest;
  • Peer-reviewed publication record and conference presentation experience;
  • Currently or formerly permitted by the CA State Historic Preservation Division (Permit to Conduct Archaeological Activities in the State of CA); and
  • Record of successful contract and grant funding in CRM.

Working in the state of California is a condition of employment for this position. Even if part or all of an employee's assignment can be performed remotely, the employee must maintain a permanent residence in the state of California. The employee must be able to accept on-campus instruction, as assigned, and come to campus when needed.
