Instructor in Visual Communication Design -The Design School

The Design School at Arizona State University invites applications for multiple full-time, Instructors in Visual Communications Design. This is a non-tenure track appointment beginning Fall 2022. These positions are renewable on an annual basis contingent upon availability of resources, satisfactory performance, university funding and the needs of the unit.

The Design School is committed to creating inclusive spaces that welcome and celebrate cultural diversity and decolonizing design education. The Design School is the largest and most comprehensive design school in the country. It plays prominent roles in design research, pedagogy and public engagement within the Herberger Institute, the University and the greater Phoenix community. Over the next year the Design School is embarking on an exciting ‘redesign’ process – building the next great American design school at the New American University, a school that is relevant, equitable and collaborative. The strategic planning process will engage the local community, country and world in defining what a design school in the future will look like. The successful candidate will join the School on that journey.

Currently, the school has approximately 55 full-time faculty and 1,500 students enrolled in programs in architecture, industrial design, interior design, landscape architecture, urban design and visual communication design. The Design School faculty work on a variety of issues – from addressing the future of the Rio Salado in Metropolitan Phoenix to partnering with Google on increasing human satisfaction to working with communities across the globe to address critical issues of sustainability. In addition, the school’s curricula and research are grounded in its commitment to prepare the next generation of designers to engage in collaborative multidisciplinary inquiry so that they may work productively within and beyond the boundaries of their respective disciplines.

The visual communication design program is accredited by the National Association of the Schools of Art and Design. The program has been in existence at Arizona State University under various names, colleges, schools and departments since the 1970’s. Graduates from the program primarily go into the profession to firms/companies in New York, San Francisco, Chicago, Los Angeles, Phoenix and various destinations in-between. The pursuit of the visual communication design program is to educate designers who are well grounded with form making skills and can think, analyze and apply their design expertise using traditional and new technologies to solve problems. The program also supports two broader graduate programs, the Master of Science in Design and the Doctor of Philosophy in Design, Environment and the Arts.

The successful candidate is expected to actively participate in the Bachelor of Science in Design in Graphic Design as well as the Master of Visual Communication Design program. The appointee will be expected to teach studio courses and lecture/seminar courses, mentor students, and participate in limited service to the program, school, institute and university. In person, online and hybrid teaching is expected.

Required Qualifications:

• A bachelor’s degree in visual communication/graphic/experience design
• One year of experience teaching visual communication/graphic design studio courses at the university level
• Demonstrated excellence in teaching and scholarship and/or creative practice as appropriate for the position
• Evidence of a commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion in creative activity and/or teaching.

Desired Qualifications:

• Minimum of two years professional experience with digital and analog graphic design methods, including a working knowledge of current interactive, computational design/representation technologies and three-dimensional design expertise
• Demonstrated expertise in new digital/computational graphic communication media and experience with social media platforms
• Commitment to exploring the current and future role of visual communication design in environmentally and socially responsible design practices
• An interest in online teaching and learning
