Position Purpose
The Research Computing group in Information, Technology and Consulting ( ITC ) has created an opportunity to build development experience with virtual and augmented reality (XR). This one-year, full-time, paid position includes benefits, professional development, and access to a wide variety of cutting-edge DEV Studio equipment.
The Neukom/ ITC XR Fellow will spend one year working in the Data Experiences and Visualizations Studio ( DEV Studio), helping develop faculty research and teaching projects, supporting student use of the Studio’s equipment, and exploring the possibilities created by technology that mixes the physical world with the virtual. The XR Fellow will spend time researching problems to better understand and solve them under the mentorship of experienced members of the ITC team. In turn, the XR Fellow will provide mentoring and supervision to student workers in the Studio, helping them learn the basics of XR development. Strong written and verbal communication skills are a requirement of the position, as is the ability to be self-directed and highly innovative.
The fellow should be an artist or coder with a background in some aspect of virtual or augmented reality development, and with an understanding of and prior experience in at least some of the many skills required to develop XR projects, whether it be 3D modeling, programming in C#, or HCI research.

Required Qualifications - Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
- Experience in 3D modeling, programming in C#, or HCI research
- Familiarity with concepts used in mobile/augmented reality development
- A willingness and capability to learn new skills quickly, as required by emerging projects
- Creative problem solver with ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Ability to troubleshoot, particularly on the Windows platform
- Ability to collaborate with and teach others
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Good technical writing skills
- Strong organizational skills and ability to advance multiple projects simultaneously
- Attention to detail
- 1-3 years relevant experience
- Familiarity with development of AR projects using Wikitude
- Familiarity with motion capture systems

- Under the mentorship of the DEV studio director, help support faculty projects (research and teaching), through the entire project life cycle: project definition, scoping, development and delivery.
- Design and/or code VR, AR and XR projects as part of a development team
- Research a range of potential solutions to new project challenges
- Work with faculty and learning designers to develop best practices for XR use in the classroom
- Acquire new skills needed for the implementation of emerging
projects, and document associated workflows

- Support staffing and hiring in the DEV Studio during set hours and special public events
- Train, mentor and supervise student workers in the DEV Studio
- Create and document workflows for the DEV Studio
- Explore applications of and create documentation for new DEV Studio equipment
- Support researchers’ use of DEV Studio equipment across campus.

Independent Projects that Support the Broader Vision of the DEV Studio
- Under the mentorship of the DEV Studio director, work on personal projects of interest in visualization, AR, VR, XR. The project(s) must be related to the DEV Studio’s vision, and the independent work (research, design, coding etc.) must be conducted in the DEV Studio. This work should be exploratory in nature and add to Studio’s collective knowledge about how to best apply transformative technologies to solve real-world problems.
