Job Summary

Facilities Management at the University of Colorado Boulder encourages applications for the HVAC Technician position! The purpose of this role is to provide analysis, repair, maintenance and operational management of the HVAC and BAS system within the Universities’ academic buildings.

Who We Are

Facilities Management (FM) is responsible for the overall physical development and maintenance of the campus. The mission of the department is to provide a safe physical environment that promotes the advancement and transfer of knowledge.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Analysis & Repair
  • Perform journey level analysis and repair of HVAC Systems and associated equipment. This includes air handling units (AHU), VAV systems, VAV with reheats, dual duct systems, constant volume with reheats, labs with variable fume hood control, constant and variable flow heating and chilled water systems, Delta P valves, steam systems, chillers, flat plate cooling, cooling towers, boilers (steam and hot water), and process cooling water systems.
  • This position may drive university vehicles.
Commission & Calibrate
  • Commission, calibrate, and test all temperature control components within a building’s temperature control system to maintain efficient system performance and energy savings.
  • This function is performed on a defined cycle within existing buildings. May function as the lead for Facilities Management when commissioning and calibrating new work installed by a contractor.
Installation
  • Install, troubleshoot and repair all field devices of the direct digital control (DDC) systems in a building, including microprocessor based controllers, wireless controllers, signal conditioners, relays, sensors, thermostats and all related wiring.
  • Change numeric values, understand basic system programming code and alarm criteria to maintain a clear understanding of the BAS within a building.
Maintenance
  • Maintain, repair and operate chillers, split systems, cold rooms, computer room air conditioners and other related components and systems. Understand all operational and control sequences, to be able to follow all trouble shooting sequences, read all related drawings and specifications.
  • Recovery/reclamation of all refrigerants and oils per the EPA regulations and file accurate paperwork for tracking of refrigerants
Paperwork & Scheduling
  • Ensure any repair work orders are built.
  • Complete material issues requests and purchase requests to procure any material needed to support the position’s work load. Limited to a $1,000 per event purchase at the FM Construction Stores without additional approval of supervisor.
  • As an essential services employee the position is responsible to respond to other duties as assigned on an as needed basis.
  • Follow all safety policies, procedures and guidelines, as well as enforce standing operating procedures for assignments and use of equipment. Participate in and complete all safety trainings. Report potential safety hazards, mistakes, accidents and/or procedural violations to the supervisor in a timely manner.

  • This role’s work schedule is Monday - Friday from 7:30 am - 4:30 pm. May be required to work weekends, alternate or extended shifts at the discretion of the work unit supervisor.
  • This is a full time, in-person position.

What We Require
  • Must be a Colorado resident to apply.
  • Three years of progressively responsible pipe and/or mechanical HVAC experience.
  • Substitution: Appropriate education that closely relates to the job duties or successful completion of a formalized apprenticeship program will substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.
  • Must possess a valid Colorado driver’s license and pass a motor vehicle background check.
What You Will Need
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and customer service skills.
What We Would Like You To Have
  • Refrigeration certification from Denver, CO.
  • Basic residential/commercial refrigeration knowledge.
