Job Summary

Facilities Management (FM) at the University of Colorado Boulder encourages applications for the Structural Trades II position! The Structural Trades Shop work unit is responsible for the maintenance, installation, fabrication, inspection and preventive maintenance of the structural aspects of the University's buildings. This includes but is not limited to; roofs, exteriors, windows, sidewalks, stairs, ceilings, walls, doors, floors, fixed seating, architectural sheet metal, water proofing systems, and ductwork for air systems. This position provides campus with journey level structural trades support which includes fabrication, installation, maintenance, and repair of campus structural trades building components. This position will work in conjunction with the other FM trade groups, as well as other partners, including project managers, outside consultants, and engineering groups.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Structural Component Installation, Maintenance and Repairs

This position will organize and implement assigned maintenance projects by determining the best materials and most efficient methods of construction, installation, and/or repair to reach project completion while meeting code regulations as well as basic standard structural trade procedures. This work load includes all phases of structural trades maintenance assignments including glass replacement, restroom accessories repairs, as well as repairs/replacement of floor tiles, carpet tiles, ceiling tiles and grids, doors, windows, walls, chalkboards/whiteboards, and other campus structural trades building components. Correct use of hand and power tools is required for tasks.

Fabrication

Fabricate and install cabinetry, furniture, bookcases, countertops, shelving, custom wood trim, chair rail, picture rail and other fine woodworking projects by designing and reading plans or sketches, job lay out, manufacturing of parts, constructing, sanding, gluing and assembling. Recreate, restore and repair existing fine woodworking in campus buildings by duplicating and matching existing details. Plan reading and construction of walls, installation of sheetrock, insulation, cove base, base board, crown mold, door ways, acoustic ceilings and other aspects of structural remodel fabrications.

Small Construction Projects

The position works independently to complete small construction projects and fabrication projects. In support of small construction projects, duties may include removal of existing materials, framing new walls, hanging drywall, installing doors and windows, installing ceiling materials, installing flooring materials and installing interior trim.

Painting, Wall Preparation, and Color-Matching

This position performs journey level painting of interior and exterior surfaces for protection and decoration by patching, texturing, priming, sanding and/or caulking. Applies finishes by use of brush, roller and/or spray equipment. Perform drywall finishing by joint compound application, drywall taping, sanding and texture matching resulting in a finished wall. Some estimating of time and materials when requested. Mixes and matches paint, stains, and other finishing materials. This position uses their knowledge of paint formulas and ability to use tint machine to create paint colors.

Asbestos Abatement and Lead-Based Paint Awareness

This position is required to maintain certification as a “16 hour asbestos abatement certified employee”. Within this function, this position is responsible to remove, drill, scrape, clean and generally work with materials that may contain asbestos. Window putty, ceiling tiles, floor tiles and walls may contain some level of asbestos. Additionally, this position is required to attend annual training for lead-based paint awareness and stabilization processes.

Paperwork, Scheduling and Other Duties as Assigned

The position is responsible for completing material issuance requests and purchase requests to procure any material needed to support the position's work load. The position is limited to a 1,000 dollar per event purchase at the FM Construction Stores without the approval of their supervisor. The position is provided 15 minutes at the beginning and/or end of each day to complete their time card, close out work orders and to schedule their work for the following day. Time cards are required to be completed daily, when closing work orders the position is required to include closing comments and ensure any repair work orders are created. As an essential services employee, the position is responsible to respond to other duties as assigned on an "as needed" basis. To complete the duties within this PDQ the position will be required to drive a State vehicle and maintain a valid State of Colorado drivers license.

Safety

Actively participates in safety meetings. Follows all safety policies, procedures and guidelines, as well as adhere to Standing Operating Procedures for assignments and use of equipment. Participates and completes all safety trainings. Reports potential safety hazards, mistakes, accidents and/or procedural violations to the supervisor in a timely manner.

The salary range for this position is $46,677-$49,050.

What We Require
  • Four years of experience in an occupational field related to the work assigned to the position.
    • NOTE: Appropriate education or completion of a formalized apprenticeship program will substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.
  • Must be a Colorado Resident.
  • Valid Driver's License.
